Hi there!

I've followed these instructions to set up my custom domain: https://docs.appsmith.com/getting-started/setup/instance-configuration/custom-domain
I set the DNS settings several weeks ago, but the custom domain still points to GoDaddy "WebsiteBuilder Site"

Does anyone have guidance for setting up DNS so that I can access my appsmith server using custom URL?

Thank you for any help!

Details:

  • my appsmith instance is running in docker on google compute engine vm
  • I have a custom URL from godaddy
  • Several weeks ago I set the DNS setting A: to point to the fixed IP external address for the VM
  • GoDaddy DNS settings show two A records, the one I created, and one that says:
    Type: A
    Name: @
Data: <correct fixed IP for my google compute engine vm>
    Delete: <button>
    Edit: <button>

Type: A
Name: @
Data: WebsiteBuilder Site
Delete: Can't delete
Edit: Can't edit

This page explains how to set up SSL for your custom domain on the Appsmith instance.

You can't have 2 @ records. Your domain is probably locked (default i think) to prevent hijacking. Unlock the domain and it should let you change the @ record. Better idea is to create a subdomain (appsmith.yourdomain.com) and point that to your VM.

It seems there's a conflict due to two A records for the '@' host. In order to
resolve this, you will need to access your GoDaddy domain settings and make sure
only one A record exists for your custom domain that points to your Google
Compute Engine VM's fixed IP. Please follow these steps: 1. Log in to your
GoDaddy account and go to your DNS settings page for the domain in question. 2.
Look for the A record with "WebsiteBuilder Site" and see if there is an option
to deactivate or remove the Website Builder or any other conflicting services
that GoDaddy may have added. 3. If your domain is locked, find the domain
settings where you have the option to unlock the domain. This is typically a
safety feature by domain registrars to prevent unauthorized changes. 4. After
unlocking the domain, if you are not able to delete or edit the conflicting A
record, you should create a support ticket with GoDaddy or get in touch with
their customer service to assist you in cleaning up your DNS records. 5. As an
alternative, you can also consider creating a subdomain (like
appsmith.yourdomain.com) and create an A record for that subdomain pointing to
your VM's IP address. This can sometimes be a simpler solution as it often
doesn't conflict with existing services like a root domain (@) record might.
Remember that after any DNS changes, it can take some time for changes to
propagate around the internet (typically up to 48 hours). If you have just made
the changes, you may need to wait a bit longer or flush your DNS cache. If you
continue to face issues, please contact GoDaddy support for domain-specific
assistance as they will be able to help you remove any undesired records and
ensure the DNS setup is correct. If you don't find my response helpful, you can

It seems that there is a bit of confusion here. Please follow the instructions I
provided in the previous message to unlock your domain via your GoDaddy account
settings and remove any unwanted A records. If you still encounter issues with
editing or deleting the A record that points to the "WebsiteBuilder Site," you
should contact GoDaddy's support team for help with your DNS settings. Creating
a subdomain like appsmith.yourdomain.com and setting an A record for it pointing
to your VM's IP might indeed be a simpler and preferable approach, especially if
you are having issues with the root domain. If the issue persists and you need
further assistance, don't hesitate to contact GoDaddy's support or get back to
me with additional details, and I will do my best to assist you further. Just
remember to ensure that any sensitive information is not shared publicly. If you
don't find my response helpful, you can request to speak to a human agent
