#Preload Files in Background

I don't exactly know if this works - but I think so. So that if you change a setting to performance mode or similar, the window will be already rendered when Files runs in the background. When opening Files you only need to make the loaded window visible.
As I think, this should only take up some more RAM?

Files already does with Files settings > Advanced > Leave app running in the background when the window is closed and you can also enable start with Windows

Yes I had that one activated but sometimes it still needs around 2 seconds to show content.

Can you show me how fast it is for you?

wintry drum

2/3 seconds

magic fern

Ok. Do you know the technical detail about how the window is prepared? I have the feeling that some elements are still added when opening. I thought of something like Instant!

magic fern
#

Yes

wintry drum
#

I don't think it will ever be instant 🥲

magic fern

Like if it was just minimized.

#

So the last state is saved and the window already fully rendered.

#

And if you open the app, the icon will be shown in the taskbar as opened and the window is "unhidden".

Like in MacOS you can't close Finder but only minimize.

wintry drum

The solution to this is just minimise rather than close

magic fern
#

Yes...

verbal orbit
#

It will be faster overtime but if you want it instant just minimize Files rather the closing

magic fern
#

Ok, would that be easier possible: Adding an option in setting that when clicking on X it "closes" (minimizes) and "opens" (in bg) the tabs you want to see when opening files? Because there is this setting to have Home-screen when opening or where you left off

verbal orbit
#

Theres nothing more Files can implement right now, what your asking for is the minimise window button

magic fern
#

Yes, but no.

#

You know these different opening behaviors?

#

I want that the close button minimizes, closes all the tabs I had opened and open one singe Home tab. - for example - and the minimize button should only minimize.

#

Like there is minimize, maximize and close in Finder over there at 🍎

verbal orbit
#

You can set the startup setting to be open a new tab for that

magic fern
#

You mean like this?

#

But then it is fully closed and needs (so important) 2 seconds to start.

#

If you show the minimized window, it's instant.

verbal orbit
#

Files can't make it any faster right now

magic fern
#

That's what I'm trying to solve!

verbal orbit
#

Unfortunately there nothing you can do other then close the tabs you aren't using and use the minimize window button.

magic fern
#

So, my idea was a setting that changes/overrides the behavior of the close button (must be possible) to minimize the window and then directly make everything ready following the Startup settings to be reopened at some point.

verbal orbit

Again Files already does this with Files settings > Advanced > Leave app running in the background when the window is closed option

magic fern
#

I know. Maybe I'm the only one who has this issue 😢 with waiting 2sec if it could be instant...

It should be possible to hide the window instead of closing it, but it's not recommended to do that.
