You have to clone a repository from GitHub. And go to the directory you cloned to, then the app enables the functionalities to perform git operations with in the directory, such as Push, Pull and select a branch.

Click Code (green button)
Copy the link from the HTTPS one
Download GitHub Desktop app
Clone with the link
