I'm struggling between buying a Windows laptop that costs the same as the Mac mini (M4) and the Mac mini (M4)
-# With student discount and with my budget, I can get a full setup for Mac mini (M4) without keyboard and mouse or a Core i5 13th gen, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD Windows laptop that would be made in aluminum
My usage:

  • I play a lot of Windows games, not on a regular basis, but we can consider that often
  • If not for gaming, either Windows or macOS is fine
  • If it's a laptop, I will bring it with me when I need to, which isn't very often, but would happens. If it's not, it's fine, I have my iPad, but it's an A13 iPad with 3GB RAM and sometimes I would struggle doing computer works on it
  • Recently on my current HP budget-tier Windows laptop, it's been pissing me off with a new issue every single new day (whether this is because of the hardware or the software is unknown, but I know for sure an HP laptop in the budget tier is crappy)

I'd personally go for a Mac no matter what, Windows is bad imo lol

Now I have another option to go with and it’s even harder when my choice is to be made in a month: repairing my laptop which would cost 1/3 the price of the Mac and use it for an additional 2 years (estimated)
I’ve had this computer repaired quite a bit in the past, from replacing the display to the back cover because they were smashed, and now the touchpad and battery are the ones that require replacement because of that a few years ago. I’m also thinking that because of the smashed components that affected the internal hardware and causing issues like I mentioned in general chat because when I was smaller my dad smashed it during a rage

#

Been using it since 2022 so it isn’t even 4 years old yet, and it costed the same as the iPhone 15 did in 2024

right, right

It’s just that I’ve been very familiar with windows and I have to make sure everything would work as they did on windows, and whether running a decent game like Minecraft in a VM could even reach 60fps on the M4

What other games do you play?

These look like niche windows exclusives lol

That’s why I’m concerned whether the M4 would be capable of running them in a windows VM at 60fps

#

Or at least 50

Astroneer already runs at 50FPS on i7-1165G7 and I’m not sure how it behaves in a VM on M4

Just so you guys have an idea
This is how my current computer performs when playing Minecraft in a Windows 11 VM
Specs:

  • Intel Core i7-1165G7
  • 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD (400GB free)
  • Background processes including: Discord, AirPlay receiver, Microsoft Teams and other default background services

If possible please tell me if M4 can handle this same thing at at least 50FPS (using this video as a scale)

For all the issues I've been yapping about in general chat, they were possibly caused by the seriously defective battery. I can solve the issues by getting it replaced which would cost 1/5 of the Mac I'm going for, but I'm not sure whether it would be worth it or not when that would be able to hold up for an additional 2 or 3 years until I go to university
