#iPhone 15 heat and battery drain issue

Hello. I have been owning a base model iPhone 15 for 5 months. Everything was okay all that time except the last week which it has been overheating almost every day and it loses battery quickly during the overheat. I am from a country that there aren't official apple stores so i bought the phone from an official apple reseller, however if i take my phone to that store for checkup it will take more than a week for it to be checked as they will have to send it on another city. And they won't give me a phone to use until mine is fixed and i really need my phone.

I have researched the internet a lot about the overheating issues and i am going to provide as much information as i can for if someone here could help me address the issue.

So, first of all what i have noticed is that the overheating issue happens when the battery is around 30-40 percent, that's when it starts.

  1. I'm not in a hot place or somewhere with sun, so it's not that causing the overheat.
  2. I have disabled background activity
  3. When it happens I'm using messenger and maybe one app in the background for example Instagram. I have been doing it for months tho and my phone is overheating only the past week so i don't think that the reason is this either
  4. Im using ios 17.5.1 but again i don't think that my iOS version is the problem since i have my phone for 5 months and only the last week it's overheating

I don't know what i could do to solve it. Any ideas or suggestions please? I assume that messenger app is the reason of all that but I'm not really sure.

Or 17.7.3 or whatever’s out

#

But I guess that’s not an option anymore

Only a select few iPad models still get iOS 17 support

#

They typically end support for the older OS around December

#

So around when iOS 19.2 comes out, iOS 18 will not be available for supported devices

#

Your only option is to update to 18.

i don't know what i can do about it tho (if messenger is the issue)

Updating can definitely make it better, but yeah take note if it happens in a particular app

And always, if you feel like it's too hot so you might burn yourself and/or the temp warning comes on, make sure you stop using the device and call apple

Basically my post here talks about two issues, not one. The one issue is the heat issue (which when it had happened last week 2-3 times my battery was also draining very fast) And the other issue is the battery drain which is not connected to the heat issue

#

I just see my messenger app being in the top of the battery draining apps list, even higher than tiktok sometimes.(and i do watch tiktok a lot)

#

Updating is my last last last option, if no other solution is found and that's mostly cause as i explained earlier in this post, it is mostly unlikely that iOS is the issue at this problem

safe quarry
#

Look if the app has an update, could also try deleting the app and downloading it again

gentle sapphire
#

deleting it or just updating it?

safe quarry
#

Try updating it first

gentle sapphire
#

messenger has 1,03gb of files and data on my device

#

any Idea if that's normal?

safe quarry
#

As I haven't used facebook (and messenger) since like 2015 unfortunately I have no clue

gentle sapphire
#

i guess it is since insta has 3gb

safe quarry
#

But sounds maybe somewhat high but not like outrageous

gentle sapphire
#

so i have version 491.0.0 of messenger

#

and the latest is 500.0.0

safe quarry
#

Then yeah give it an update and give it a day or two

gentle sapphire
#

okay i will update it now. but maybe messenger is not even the issue. not sure

#

do you maybe have any idea how much hours of constant use should normally iPhone 15 have if the battery is completely okay?

safe quarry
#

It's a start, otherwise go down the list of the heaviest users of the battery and do the process

gentle sapphire
#

with screen on

safe quarry
#

It's very dependant on what you do with the screen on too, like if you play a huge game like Roblox or Pubg it will decrease a lot faster

gentle sapphire
#

i use tiktok mostly and messenger and a bit of instagram

safe quarry
#

TikTok is a battery drainer, like I currently have like 60%, lost 38 of those 40% to TikTok scrolling through it this morning for like 3-4 hours lol

gentle sapphire
#

you have the same phone too?

safe quarry
#

Nah I got 16 PM

gentle sapphire
#

ohh

#

btw a questiob

#

do you know if the following thing is normal? I charge my phone and let's say i plug it off at 80%. Then if i restart the phone, it will show higher battery, let's say 85. it happens always after charging. Does that mean my battery has an issue?

safe quarry
#

I haven't personally heard of it doing that before... That said it is Apple so wouldn't surprise me if it's a feature with the 80% charging cap thing

gentle sapphire
#

yes i thought that it could be cause of the 80 limit but I've disabled it and im using optimised charging but it still happens

safe quarry
#

Hmm, it doesn't sound like it should do that, let me do some googling

gentle sapphire
#

okayy

safe quarry
#

"The battery was at 97% when you charged it. But, this number took into account that there were several apps running at the time, so that was figured in the 97%.

When you restarted the phone, those other apps that were running before were no longer running, so the battery figure reflected the change that the apps were no longer running, so it showed a higher battery figure.

Your battery is fine. "

Apple community site for the win

#

Some more googling and yeah I was kinda right with the 80% cap, but infact it happens all the time

gentle sapphire
#

oh so it's not an issue?

#

i have another question btw

#

do you know if it's true that your battery drains slower if you don't close apps in the background and always let them running?

safe quarry
#

I think it's true yes but I also think it's minor enough that as long as you're not planning on using the phone for several days without charging it's not worth it

#

Basically, if you don't close them it's completely fine, but if you accidentally close an app or need to close an app because it's not working as expected you're not going to die over it

bright owl
#

It's recommended to not close them, at it takes more battery than if you did close them because of iOS's amazing memory management.

Make sense?

# bright owl Make sense?

yess i just feel like my battery drains faster if i have many apps in the background but idk it could just be my feeling

btw I'm gonna post here my last 10 days average battery stats, maybe it can help someone help me about my original issue on this post.

#

so the average battery summary of last 10 days is:
Messenger (it says notifications). 36%
Tiktok 25
Insta 21
YouTube 11
Average screen on time: 7 hours 27 min
Average closed screen: 42 mins
I have iPhone 15, i always charge it once it reaches 20 and charge it until 80. Is my screen time fine or should it last more? Do any of my apps use more battery than they should?

any help?

safe quarry
#

If you are still worried about your battery you should contact the support, let them test the battery for you

#

At this point there is nothing more we can do here

gentle sapphire
safe quarry
#

You can always call the support anyways

gentle sapphire
safe quarry
#

They can test to see that the battery is there, legit and working

gentle sapphire
#

from call?

safe quarry
#

Yep

gentle sapphire
safe quarry
#

Is it the apps not updating automatically?

gentle sapphire
#

yesss

safe quarry
#

You have it set to auto update right?

gentle sapphire
#

yes

#

and i have WiFi connection normally

safe quarry
#

Latest iOS as well?

gentle sapphire
#

nop 17 but on my friends phone with same ios they do update

safe quarry
#

Hmm, I would suggest the update then just to rule out it being anything with the OS
