most likely closed the lid on debris of some kind that caused an internal crack in the LCD

or there was internal stress already and it got released abruptly

Adding on to what Alpha said, it's most likely an internal break inside of the LCD. It's also possible that if the MacBook was dropped it caused the damage to the inner LCD. Unfortunately, I don't think there is much of an option to fix it other then buying a new screen.

Update: got the screen replaced by Apple for free as the investigation by them concluded that the LEDs inside the display panel fused due to voltage surge and not physical damage. Lucky me!
