yeahh that sounds like something you should probably take to the apple store
they can examine it and you might need a replacment

It's highly likely that the case's battery is dead and only works when plugged in
But they would pop up like this
I had the exact same issue and had to get my case replaced
but before jumping to any conclusions it's better to take it to apple first
So you just replace the case with the same AirPods you had
