It's most probably a hardware defect. I'd advise you to go to an apple store. They will give you a replacement model.

Yes, that’s why I thought it is most likely a software thing. We don’t have Apple Stores in South Africa and the iStores don’t have that policy you mentioned
Which ios version are the phones running?
The iStore here in SA fixed my MagSafe charger under warranty on my 13. I think if you take it in to iStore and they run the diagnostics and pick up a problem they will sort it out. They did on my 13.

I have recently gotten the 15 and don’t have an issue. So I would suggest taking the unit in.
If both are having an issue it doesn’t sound like the unit. Maybe software or is it only in a specific app?
