#SteamVR already running, high latency when it worked

Hello, I am a quest 2 user and oculus link has become completely unusable on v76 (frame rate dips down to 60 in headset for no reason, no ASW related to my knowledge) I tried to move to ALVR to fix it, and that did fix the frame rate issue, but I have high latency (I play beat saber, and 80 mills makes the game unplayable), how do I get SteamVR working, and how can I lower the latency in wired mode.
Thanks

steamvr is still not working...

#

also the latency was abnormally high, it said alvr was adding 20 mills of additional overhead

#

I would take a screenshot but steam vr is not working so I can't

wanton willow
#

if anyone has anymore advice for me can you please ping me, thanks

#

I don't remember, but I need to fix steam vr before I can even consider the issue with the latency

#

oh wait I got steam vr fixed

#

that was super weird

#

I don't know how I fixed it

#

hope it stays fixed

#

here is the breakdown

#

it's lower for some reason... I don't know what happened

#

I will try to play a game, see if it's a mess or not

#

the delay for me considering it unplayable is very low, link only just about shoots under that, until today anyways

#

well

#

#

after v76/v77 dropped

#

that broke it

#

game is very playable now

#

it was double this when I made the ticket

#

however...

#

it looks like it's buffering or something

#

is there a way I can turn it off?

#

I would rather have stutter

#

by the way, if you didn't see the tag, I am doing it over USB

#

so that might be the reason

wanton willow
#

ok

#

one more thing...

#

any way I can make the streamer start when I plug my headset in?

#

sounds imposable, but it's worth a shot to ask

#

could scirpt it myself if you don't have a way

wanton willow
#

Yeah I saw all that

#

Just one piece missing to make it better in every way compared to meta's shitty offering

#

You would need a background service

#

Yeah

#

I can spin something up sometime soon

#

As a demo

#

Yeah, I can do that

#

Later though, it's 1:30 am

#

And I have errands to run tomorrow

#

So I'll get around to it, won't forget though

#

I have been in need of a new project to work on now that school is out

#

Even if it's relatively small compared to what I normally do

wanton willow
#

hi again,

enabling buffering doesn't smooth it out, is there a setting I am missing? Or is there no way to get this to be smooth. There is a specific reason why I am wondering

wanton willow
#

Setting it to 1 frame and 10 frames has the same staircaseing

#

I might misunderstand what you said before

#

I've tried all the numbers

wanton willow
#

Like... a screenshot? Of the graph? Or of the setting

#

Yeah, give me a second

#

yeah I am aware

wanton willow
#

this one

#

it isn't the high latency that isn't the issue I think, it's the inconsistency

#

the specific issue I am running in to is that playing high bpm jumps in beat saber is almost imposable when they are done for an extended duration. Maps I have been able to FC for years are now imposable to even pass on ALVR, so I'm pretty sure it's not a skill issue (could be, but I highly doubt it). I can still play them on oculus link just fine (on my laptop only, oculus link is broken on my desktop, that's why I switched to ALVR).

#

340+

#

only map I have played less than that was 270 and I didn't have an issue

#

oh lmao

#

the... bitrate?

#

or something else

#

340+ bpm, I don't have another way to express it

#

notes per second?

#

I have no idea because it tells you for the entire song, not just the jump sections

#

let me see if arc viewer says

#

I am sure that it's not a skill issue, because I don't have the same issue on my laptop

#

the only thing I haven't tried to fix oculus link is reinstalling windows, and I don't want to do that

#

5-6 nps and 360+ bpm doesn't really add up to me

#

yeah I know the math but from playing the game that doesn't make sense

#

very much not, bpm is fixed to the song, nps is fixed to the notes

#

they almost never correlate

#

when it comes to expressing streams and jumps you use bpm normally

#

let me get some reaplays to show what I'm talking about

#

give me a second

#

wait I forgot you have to pay for beat leader to get them

#

but it doesn't really matter the specifics

#

also

#

it's only speed maps that I can't play, and only when they hold a timing on one hand for a long time (over 3 seconds ish)

#

and sadly, speed maps are my best skillset 😭

#

you have to pay to get non full replay links

#

this has always been a thing

#

oculus link on the laptop

#

on my pc oculus link runs at 60 fps for no reason

#

it's not spacewarp, because there is no video errors that are common with spacewarp

#

I can send the replay files

#

you can upload them to arcviewer

#

old oculus link replay

#

this score is like 6 months old

#

I'll set a new score on my laptop for a direct comparison

#

I would record these live but recording the game causes unplayable lag because the GPU encoder can't do more than one stream without freaking out

#

everything is breaking on my laptop

I'll be back with 2 videos, one full playthough of some song, one on alvr, one on oculus link (on my laptop). Give me like 20 minutes

wanton willow
#

I was gonna send video but uhh...

#

it stopped

#

max buffering is still set to 1 frame

#

just fire up oculus link on my laptop

#

got a score (400pp choke due to laptop lag spike)

#

then moved to my pc

#

and played... and still performed well

#

I thought it was just a skill issue that I had overcome or something

#

thought I was crazy

#

didn't check the stats untill I posted about it

#

the frame buffer is still being weird but it's different now

#

I don't miss full steams anymore though

#

this isn't stutttering

#

the frame buffer just switches between 1-2 mills to 8 mills for no reason

#

it stays like that, consistantly, for a few seconds

#

I have no idea what's going on lol

#

this software is black magic to me

#

like with video codecs?

#

like the devs of alvr don't control a lot of what's going on here?

#

ohhh

#

there is one thing that's different

#

my active cable isn't plugged in

#

it's still wired the headset just doesn't charge

#

yeah nothing changed

#

wait what?

#

am I on usb 2??

#

shouldn't be...

#

normally it can hit 400

#

something weird is going on

#

I'll do some more looking and post any findings here

wanton willow
#

it's at 400 now

wanton willow
#

problem came back after I restarted my computer

#

honestly think it might be worth it to reinstall windows to get oculus link working again...

#

assuming a windows reinstall fixes I don't actually know if that will

#

by the way, I would like to say the following

I do like this project, and this issue only applies to one specific skillset on one specific game. ALVR, ignoring the issue I have ran into (after getting everything else working), has been much better than oculus link. I haven't run into crashes, proper lag spikes, or long startup times like I do on oculus link. Having a way to use SteamVR instead of the Oculus OpenXR runtime is so nice (I had to write a mod for beat saber in order to rebind the pause button, SteamVR just lets you rebind it in the settings).

I hope that one day this issues will get ironed out ||pun intended||, even if I get oculus link working again I would switch back to ALVR in a heartbeat because it's a much more seamless experience.
