is pc using ethernet?
is version of alvr matched on pc and headset?
did u try restarting both pc and headset?
is there vpn active on pc?
is pc network connection set to private?
yes please answer all the critical questions above
ok this is your problem
plug a cable in
pc should not use wifi
Wait
But i cant
The Wi-Fi router is too far it was working with Wi-Fi for days before this
No pc
if you have a pc - then why are you using wifi on a pc seriously?
fix your router settings to disable client isolation
How?
Also why did it work before and not now?
i have no idea - routers are weird about this
Hmm
?
only one device can use wifi at a given instant
But i have a family that uses it at the same time
so you are throwing performance and latency away
thats even worse and definitely hte cause
most cheap routers only have one radio, and they cannot serve high performance vr at same time as older wifi versions
I have good router
expensive routers with multiple radios can handle it better
even so its better to have dedicated wifi router
I have a Wi-Fi booster
all you need to do is plug a cable in its that easy
In my room
We have lots of Wi-Fi boosters
BRU what
Hell no i am not doing that
mesh networks or wifi repeaters are no good for this
Money nonono
what settings are you using anyway?
trying to use h264 over a crippled network is not gonna be good
Just normal with lowest press
that doesnt mean anything
if u set everything to the lowest then this is how u got it to work
you have very low bandwidth but you can run at potato settings
No i mean alvr settings
look at your statistics graph - it will show you what is wrong
probably shows network latency is awful
In alvr?
what is your bitrate?
Is 8ms good?>
thats normal but its not constant
144.17 mb/s download
thats not bad
I did 2 tests
but spikes are the issue
24.44 mb/s upload
I do it multiple times and it says 8ms every time
why are you testing internet speed?
Ye
this is not using your internet
To tell u my latency
its speed between pc and headset we care about
Ohhh
So how i check ?
we dont care about your internet speed at all - you could even be offline for this (so long as its not multiplayer game)
you have a fancy wifi network, it probably has some diagnostic page
How yk i have fancy Wi-Fi>
i have an asus router and it has an app that shows all the diagnostics
anyway - the recommendations are same - plug a cable in
mesh networks are not good for vr - if you move from one cell to another it will disconnect you probably
like that error you are seeing - maybe related to wifi boosters or cells
u can buy a cheap router and just put that beside your pc, it doesnt need an expensive one
it just needs one free from interference or bad settings
omg my wifi went
out
wait
i was saying i have the xfinity dual band 802.11 ac
@jaunty cedar
is there any other way?
yes you can change your wifi card on pc to instrastructure mode and make a direct connection to headset
but this is quite involved and you may break your pc
wtf
break my pc??!!
it will disconnect you from your wifi network for sure - instead you would make a new wifi network from the pc
and only have pc and headset on it
should i check if i have a wifi page
that is not relevant
there wont be a wifi page because there wont be a wifi router
the pc will act as a router
ðŸ˜
its likely you should get someone to help with your network
so is there anything i can do that does not involve getting a new wifi just for vr or using ethernet
nobody does this other stuff - because everyone uses an ethernet cable lol
ethernet cables cost basically nothing
can a wifi extender have a ethernet cable>
there is no such thing as a wifi extender
bru what
its just a wifi repeater that destroys performance and causes your problem
its just repeating all the signals
its more like a wifi interferer
so why do these big companys sell them
because its works for low performance stuff
most ppl do not care about high performance wifi speed
only vr uses 200mbit and is sensitive to this
streaming vr is the most demanding thing you can use your wifi for
ok so unplug my wifi "repeter"?
they are a crap way to extend a network
the correct way is with multiple routers and ethernet cables
but this is a mesh network - and you dont want to move between cells for vr
is my wifi good in general tho
if you keep getting disconnected then no its not
all you need is reliable 200mbit
so its completely useless to have a 1600mbit network but its not reliable coz you use boosters
probably no because other ppl are also using it
if someone else starts watching youtube that might impact you
it used to work with everyone
with what performance?
usually bad network just gives artifacting
max fps
if you are getting kicked off then something worse than that is wrong
boosters are definitely a big no
so i will start with unplugging that
im pretty sure i have the only one
i also restarted my wifi
ill go try and tell u
yep still does not work
discuss network problems with your network administrator
says it was aborted by host machine
and know that you should be using an ethernet cable
how long can they get?
100 meters
like 200 feet?
get your network admin to sort it out
you do not manage the network
you should not tamper with it
wait
whoever bought the gear and set it up
could i just unplug my wifi, move it to my room, then use ethernet?
of course
oh
this is literally what people do
thats simeple
simple
uuhh
but there is something weird in the wall
that the wifi thing uses
yes the router has a cable to outside world probably
you can have multiple routers
they are cheap
i have a cheapo router for boring household stuff, and i use the high performance one for my pc only
you need to understand networking to set this up
so discuss with whoever setup the current network
.
if i just need a power thing i can do it rn
little hole means nothing, discuss with person that pays the internet bill
why
do you actually know how your internet is served?
then discuss with the person that does
i dont think any one does
the wifi was setup when we moved
if its student acommodation then its university network
is there a way to check?
wifi is not internet
wtfff
so you dont own this gear? and didnt set it up?
hold up
you just have the password and connect to wifi?
you have no control over this and cant change settings then?
maybe?
probably need to setup your own wifi for vr if you cant change this one
tbh im not sure
could i just move it to my room and use ethernet or could something go wrong?
This is what it looks like
2 things plugged into the wal
does it need those? @jaunty cedar
yes one of those is where your internet is coming in i would guess
look for an ethernet socket more like
maybe ethernet, maybe phone line, hard to tell
if thats ethernet then thats your magic fix
second one
i cannot fix your network remotely - and i wont even try
get someone to sort it out for you
everyone is responsible for their own home network
how do i check and btw that white line conntects to the first picture
i dont know
oh
im not american i dont even recognise these power sockets
oh
but ethernet in america is same as ethernet everywhere
ok
follow the cables and see where they go
oh
if its ethernet they will all go to some common switch/router
i see thats a dual mode router as well - usually thats bad and u should disable the 2.4ghz
but if you do that all the old clients will get kicked off
oh
we have 2 speparate networks im pretty sure
yeah thats the way to go
one network for old clients, one for modern high performance stuff
and no mixing
i can check later tho
but still pc should use ethernet is the critical flaw
i am trying
in like 1 min i will have drawing
the things circled are the same wire
@jaunty cedar does that help?
no idea what that is
ah
hmm
just look at your router and count the ethernet cables
i will talk to my parents about it but for now air link work?
what do they look like
air link is the same thing
if you had bad network it will affect all
there are many guides for this online
they will all tell you to use ethernet
all right that is my goal for now
when we say "wireless vr" this is the headset that is wireless
i will count the ethernet
well i will send pictue
I found this
@jaunty cedar
which cord
goes into the wall
and goes somewhere, to other router
really?
this thing?
goes to that
@jaunty cedar ur right air link does not work rn, whitch is weird because this has never happend but i will talk to my parents about getting me ethernet
btw sorry for wasting ur time
.closede
.close
@jaunty cedar how is power line adapter?
awful
its not high performance or reliable
Is wireless Ethernet bridge better?
no - thats what you are using right now and causing your issue in the first place
But i dont have a Ethernet cable
that would be the wireless part
Chat gpt trippin?
this is just a second router
Oh
it does not avoid the double dipping at all
use ethernet and stop messing around
I cant cuz the internet gets fed into that one room
So would powerline be better>
?
WTF
they are cheap and sold everywhere
and all yours devices have ports for it
and it will just work with no configuration probably
just remember to set the network connection as private in windows, not public
Wait huh?
And maybe that will fix?
How do i do it
I mean i have a Wi-Fi intent
@jaunty cedar
This
And something u said around a hour ago whitch was something with the router settings
how do i do this or is this just the private thing?
this is the last thing to do right?
this isnt your problem lol
getting ethernet cable is the only thing u should be doing
ok i understand but any little boost helps
so how do i do this
or is the private the only thing that is gonna help even just a little
this is just a firewall thing not a performance thing
no that is just about discoverability
only ethernet cable will help - and removal of interfering devices like boosters
ok so unplug my booster
and is this big thing a booster?
no thats an ethernet switch
with all the ethernet cables going into it
this is what you should be connecting your pc to
you could also connect it to router if it has ports, would be same
i would connect to whichever is closer and more convenient
u should not be messing with network - only the person that set it up should touch it
well unplugging my wifi extender is fine because it wont mess with the actual thing
if you cant tell a wifi extender apart from ethernet switch this wont end well
you will break the network and probably get in trouble
yes forbidden ethernet cable
could this work?
exactly why are you not using this?
idk lol
ahh this just got alot better
so
lemme get a stool then take a pic so u can get a better angle
try it out, make sure to turn your wifi off so its forced to use ethernet
if it doesnt work then make sure that orange cable is actually going somewhere - it should be going to ethernet switch
and yeah i see an orange cable in the other picture so fingers crossed maybe good
Well that’s confusing
The problem is that that orange one does not get anywhere close to my pc (it’s across my room)
@jaunty cedar
you need to extend that cable somehow
I would need to switch it for a longer one
put ethernet switch there is how
Huh?
thats not easy because its run thru the wall
put a switch there, and then run another cable to pc
do i need to buy switch?
yeah but they are dirt cheap
is it the big wite box i have?
get tiny cheapo 4 port switch
Does Best Buy have em?
yeah for less than $20
Bet and Ethernet cables?
Lemme friend u rq
Add me
Ur not excepting friends
Where r u?
@jaunty cedar
ofc not lol
Ur not gonna friend me?
nop
i am a lot older than you probably, i dont use social media
ok well besides that point tomorrow u think i go to best buy buy a switch and ethernet cable?
sry to be rude
yes
does it go in one end and come out the next or how does it work?
so just the ethernet?
just like the other switch in your house
or all of th em
there are only ethernet ports on it
your internet router is special - it has an ethernet switch built in
its multiple devices combined into one
are they all ethernet
no some are for cable internet
thats a different function, just combined into same device
ok just the orangle one?
the cheap 20 bucks ethernet switch u buy will only have ethernet and not extra functions for internet router
ok but will buying a fancy one be better?
or will the cheap perform the same
@jaunty cedar ?
alright perfect
but lemme send a pic of some i saw online
and they are called ethernet switch right not just switch?
correct
and you need at least 2 ethernet ports
one for that orange cable, other for cable going to pc
and you need that other cable
and enough length to reach from switch to pc
and switch need to be located in the wardrobe where orange cable appears, and needs power there
im getting some pics rq
but there is only ports on one side
so the cable to my pc would have to go up and over it
which would bend the ethernet cagble
and i could buy this @jaunty cedar is that all the right stuff?
all good but u can get cheaper
it is inconvenient
all this hassle just coz that orange cable is not long enough
your house was not wired up very well
ok
the cable should be terminated with a port in the wall, allowing you to plug in
that seems better right?
not just have hte cable sticking out of the wall like that
is there a way to check?
what problem do you have now?
its impossible to get this wrong - just plug the cables in
you cannot do this wrong
well like if its just random cables i could waste 30 dollars
think i should just go for it?
ofc
like thats only arouidn 3 weeks of allowence
idk cuz my parents say wifi is fine
and why are you buying 5 port switch when you only need 2
and huge long cable when you only need short one
your parents are not network engineers
well its also for vr which is not the most productive thing for me to be spending time on
u can buy this for less than 20 bucks
oh
by walking into a shop
and all of this just because that orange cable does not reach down to the pc
ye
did u try pulling it out more? is there no slack?
its also just for me
oh i have not tried
but my room is liek 10 feet across
dont pull too hard
more like 20 feet
thats what i was thingking
like is it worth the risk?
just pull it gently thats fine
cuz i would not know how to conntect it back
if it doesnt have any slack it will be obvious
u should be moving your pc as close as u can get away with
my desk is on the other sdise
then u are forced to extend it somehow
and that thing is in the top of my wardrobe
with what we have been talking about for a grand total of like 20 - 30 dollars right?
yeah
or buy a longer cable and replace that orange one
but this is very difficult coz its in the wall
yea
ask parents if that is possible
and hiring person to do that is bad
depends on if there are maintenance ducts
i mean they dont know anything
their jobs have absolutly nothing to do with eletrical wiring
and stuff like this
ethernet cables in wardrobes does not strike me as professional network setup
expect to see rj45 ports in wall - this is what ethernet plugs into
its at the top
i can send a bigger pic
See what i mean
