#GPU coil whine and crashes PC on SteamVR launch through ALVR

I'm using ALVR 20.11.1 stable with Nvidia RTX 4060 on a Windows 11 system

Whenever I launch SteamVR through ALVR (yes Steam is already open, yes I went through the troubleshooting guide but nothing works) my GPU makes a coil whine and if I don't sign out or shut down quick enough, my entire PC freezes and I have to force shut it down with the physical button

I've tried reinstalling it, resetting the settings etc. but no luck
I checked I have the correct versions of Nvidia drivers installed
I'm using the ALVR Launcher to manage and launch the instances if that helps

This started happening randomly and everything was working fine for weeks. I think SlimeVR might have something to do with it because it started happening a few days after I started using SlimeVR, but I've tried uninstalling SlimeVR too but it still crashes.

The only thing that works now is if I use ALVR nightly, but if I install the apk for nightly through the ALVR launcher onto my Pico 4, it opens for the first time and works just fine, but as soon as you exit the app and reopen it (doesn't matter if you restarted the headset) the app never opens and loads the whole time. And even then it sometimes crashes the same way ALVR stable does when opening SteamVR.

Here's my system info:
AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G
Nvidia RTX 4060
Nvidia 566.36
PC
Windows 11
32 GB RAM
144Hz Monitor

This was already fixed, try nightly

gpu coil whine is just because your gpu is being made to do work, any software could cause this

#

stuff with unbounded fps in particular

#

and freezing is sign of instability - not enough power or cooling

I see a newer version of nightly is out, I'll try that but I think the apk will still not work after I open it the first time

This is very odd

#

You're using both server and client on the same nightly version?

I think so

im using ALVR nightly 2025.01.08 i'll try the newer versions but yeah I installed the APK using the ALVR launcher and a wired connection to my headset and it installed just fine

If it bothers you enough you can try this nightly version it's before the bug, but I don't know if the OS error is fixed it in it https://github.com/alvr-org/ALVR-nightly/releases/tag/v21.0.0-dev01%2Bnightly.2024.11.28 but other then that the only solution for now is to just go to the three dots on the app, click view access then go to details and remove the mic permission before starting the app

You can allow the mic afterward and it'll be good till the next time you open the app again
