#How to correct the black bars when turning head left & right

Hi there I love alvr ๐Ÿ™‚ it greatly improved my msfs and hlAlyx experience on my old setup. But I wish to ask one thing and that is when I turn my head left or right i see vertical black bar creep into frame for a moment then disappear. How can i correct this so that it is always out of frame? Perhaps increase horizontal frame size somehow perhaps? idk.

Thanks

Probably my PC setup is struggling on msfs too high settings, I notice I can reduce the appearance time of the black bar by reducing my graphics settings to potato level, but the black bar still appears momentarily still.

I have no air link streaming issues with alvr it is very good using prismxr, but perhaps I will try using cable again to see if there is significant difference.

PC Hardware:
intel i7 6700k oc 4.8Ghz
AMD RX 570 8gb oc 1400Mhz
32GB DDR4 Ram oc 4100Mhz
Wifi 6e
For wifi air link I am using prismxr puppis s1.
Fractal Liquid Cooling
Temps never go over 64c

VR:
Quest 3s + alvr

Software:
Windows 11
MSFS 2020
SteamVR + alvr

alvr v20.11.1 settings:
Presets
Resolution: Preset not applied
framerate: 80hz
Encoder preset: Quality
video codec: AV1 looks great for me (h264 quality not great in msfs)
bitrate: adaptive
stream protocol: UDP

Ok so I did some different connection options testing:

  1. alvr & steam vr using prismxr wifi - black bar issue exists
  2. alvr & steam vr using 6e router - black bar issue exists same as 1)
  3. usb link cable & meta quest link app - no black bar but vr headset tracking is super sensitive on msfs and not smooth making it not enjoyable, image (is using h264?) not as good as alvr AV1 codec
  4. usb link cable & steam vr app - no black bar, vr headset tracking is nice and smooth on msfs, image (again is using h264?) not as good as alvr AV1 codec, some image jitter.

I cannot use alvr with usb link cable for testing experiment.
I see this tutorial to use alvr with usb (https://github.com/alvr-org/ALVR/wiki/ALVR-wired-setup-(ALVR-over-USB))
But I think it better for alvr to include within app option to force usb link cable connection option. I think I will wait for this to develop.

Overall, for now, I think my best use is to use option 1) as the picture is clearer with av1 codec and bitrate higher than using my usb link cable, black bar is only minor issue, the game is very playable, i am just being greedy for perfection. Maybe I will reduce graphics settings lower.

you have pretty low spec cpu/gpu, that's probably why you have black bars

  • Yes probably

you don't have av1 support on your gpu - you fallback to software, which is slow on your cpu*

  • Not sure, because when i choose h264 + adaptive bitrate i get blocky vr picture, changing to constant bitrate 1000Mbps fixes it, then if i choose av1 codec adaptive bitrate is fine but constant bitrate 1000Mbps is blocky. Something is happening?

alvr already has built in cable support but it's scheduled for release, not now yet
if you want it, you can go nightly i think but you need nightly client too

  • Ok good news ๐Ÿ™‚

your best bet is using probably wired h264 with 300-500 mbps and don't disable foveated encoding if you did

  • enabling foveated encoding improves the situation, it was disabled before.

I have found the best situation for msfs on my potato pc:
alvr settings:
framerate 80hz
encoder preset: quality
bitrate mode: adaptive
adapt to framerate: tick
preferred codec: av1
foveated encoding: tick
color correction: tick (looks nice on msfs)

Everything is playable, and black bar issue is just 0.1ms in view after enabling foveated encoding.

I look forward to testing alvr usb cable option in future, but I find prismxr bitrate excellent and maybe better than usb link cable (non-meta usb)

Thanks for tips.

i think no av1

#

says hevc possible, but it was bad test for me

Hello! This is automatic message for message containing words "6500 xt"
Please note this GPU doesn't have hardware encoders and will perform poorly in vr. You will fallback to software (CPU encoding), so expect high CPU usage from SteamVR/ALVR

do you think new intel b580 any good?

#

rtx 4060?

#

only 8gb ram

#

i would prefer intel b580 i hope msfs has good support

#

12gb ram

#

i could test, and do amazon return if no good

#

but nvidia release 5060 in a few weeks

#

haha yes nvidia manipulate market

#

closed source

#

maybe intel b580 will have good linux support

#

havent tried vr in linux yet, i think more fps than windows 11 bloat

#

will there be a linux quest rom?

#

i bet it is poorly locked

#

using adb it is easy to pull or push files and folders already

#

MSFS runs like shit on linux, i boot windows for that

#

and this is with an extremely high end setup

#

on windows msfs is also a beast to run, even with a 4090 u cannot run it at high settings

#

one of the only justifications for owning a 4090 is that you play flight sims in vr

#

virtual desktop has some magical tweaks for MSFS that make it run better, im not sure how - if you launch it from VD directly instead of steamvr it runs better

#

so many people in the flight sim community are recommending this - VD is not a free program however

#

i think its because its bypassing steamvr

tropic basalt
#

alvr works for me, glad i didnt have to buy vd

mint marlin
#

saying msfs runs fine on a low spec system is quite a claim

#

and especially in vr

tropic basalt
#

msfs should invest more of their time in vr optimisation though

mint marlin
#

you must have everything turned way down - hard to read cockpit instruments at low settings

tropic basalt
#

cockpit on cessna 152 is viewable now i use alvr, was blurry using meta link app

mint marlin
#

bind a key to vr zoom

tropic basalt
#

top gun maverick dlc is awesome

mint marlin
#

even with ultra settings need to zoom

tropic basalt
#

i am head tilting as i fly through the canyons in f18

mint marlin
#

try flying over cities - in fs2024 there is even more detail now

tropic basalt
#

most of my settings are using medium

ground vehicles etc moving around

mint marlin
#

there are the game settings, then there are the alvr encode settings

#

with nvidia can use DLSS and framegen, helps a lot

tropic basalt
#

yes i add basic number of vehicles too

mint marlin
#

want monster cpu and gpu to run this at max

#

unfortunately my house still looks like melted cheese when i fly close to it

tropic basalt
#

one day i will win the lottery and buy 5090 and 7050x3d

mint marlin
#

i have very good performance here, but my problem is control setup

tropic basalt
#

so far my liquid cooling is making everything run fine, temps never above 64c

mint marlin
#

i dont have a proper seat with way to mount joysticks

#

and its difficult to use vr and pc and hotas at same time in comfort

tropic basalt
#

stick i use is velocityone turtle beach on amazon on sale

mint marlin
#

i have a hotas but problem is mounting it

#

and switching between motion control and joystick sometimes

#

want to reach up and flip a switch in cockpit

tropic basalt
#

velocityone has hotas all on the stick so no need to clamp

mint marlin
#

yes but where to mount the stick?

#

some planes use sidestick

#

some have it between legs

#

there is no general setup

tropic basalt
#

clamp it between legs

mint marlin
#

i have no way to do that right now is issue

#

no proper way, just janky setup lol

tropic basalt
#

diy a clamp using 2020 profile

mint marlin
#

and i work from home, so dont want to rearrange my setup all the time

tropic basalt
#

get a velocityone
