I use a zwave relay. My system had a control box with an off, manual and automatic setting. The automatic was hooked to an old digital timer which would trigger the system on a time. I put a zwave relay in here, so I can activate it via home assistant.
then I hooked up the relay as an output to a manual_thermostat component - where if the temperature from an average sensor gets below a minimum threshold it switches the system on
