You can connect Home Assistant devices to Google home either by connecting them through Nabu Casa or doing the same with a more manual method: https://youtu.be/RqGi_GI0ltU

Today I will show you how to integrate Google Home/Google Assistant with Home Assistant which will allow you to control all of your Home Assistant connected devices with your Google Home or Nest speaker, all done for free without a cloud subscription.

Of course if you'd like to support the Home Assistant project and avoid doing these steps, che...

What do you mean by the interface? You mean the dashboard?

left glen
#

You can totally adapt it to your needs tho πŸ˜„ Everything Smart Home got some videos for example on Mushroom

#

In this video I show you how to create a clean and minimalistic smart home dashboard using Home Assistant and Mushroom. Mushroom is a take on Minimalist UI, that has a focus on making things easier to use, with everything being accessible from the UI to click and select. This makes it possible to build a really nice mobile smart home dashboard v...

What do you want to make smart?

#

Wouldn't do all of them DIY myself tho πŸ˜…

#

At least, what do you mean with light?

#

If you mean a LED strip, than it's easy to DIY using WLED

left glen
#

Not sure what you mean with DIY but you can easily buy for example zigbee modules to make your light smart

left glen
#

I use for example Zigbee modules to make dumb lights smart while keeping existing light switches

#

I try to avoid Tuya as most as possible, especially their Wi-Fi devices πŸ˜…

#

Smart bulbs it is πŸ˜„

#

There are Zigbee smart bulbs too and than with a decoupled switch

#

Don't like the ☁️

It'll be totally local if you use Zigbee without a hub and straight to Home Assistant with for example a Sonoff Zigbee stick

#

Nah if you got plans to make it smart, just ask πŸ™‚

#

A Sonoff USB stick

#

What kind of fitting have the bulbs?

left glen
#

Without using any cloud service, so full local control πŸ™‚

#

Yes, that's the Zigbee gateway. You can either use ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT (software to interpret the Zigbee stuff)

#

Yeah sure, depending on what software you use, you will be able to connect multiple Zigbee brands to that gateway

#

Much easier πŸ˜„ It's almost plug and play. For ZHA you just need to add an integration to Home Assistant and select the USB stick

#

No, just from Home Assistant, no Chinese apps involved πŸ˜„

#

Zigbee2MQTT is an Home Assistant add-on (which is basicly a Docker container) and ZHA is a Zigbee integration inside Home Assistant

#

But if you use the add-on you'll need to have an MQTT broker installed too, so ZHA is probably much easier πŸ˜„

#

No, you'll have to choose between Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA

#

For Zigbee2MQTT you'll need to use MQTT to get your devices in Home Assistant. ZHA is part of Home Assistant already (integration)

#

So ZHA is much easier for beginners

#

But Zigbee2MQTT mostly has better device support

#

The other way around πŸ˜„ ZHA is an integration in Home Assistant πŸ™‚

#

On what device do you have Home Assistant running?

#

You need to run it locally indeed on a device that's on 24/7

#

No no no, you'll need to have a "server" running it

#

Yeah sure! Do you have a NAS or something by any chance?

#

Maybe it's better to try it first before buying something πŸ˜„

#

Or have you maybe got a spare Raspberry Pi for example?

#

Or anything similar to that?

Congratulations @minor harbor! You just advanced to level 3!

#

Raspberry Pi is better for sure as not every NAS supports virtualization/containers

#

Or you could go for a mini computer

#

With another stick (gateway), yes πŸ˜„

#

The sonoff stick is only for zigbee btw

#

No but Raspberry Pis are very hard to find these days πŸ˜…

#

These are all the installation methods

#

A total different transmission protocol πŸ˜… Zwave devices are mostly more expensive than zigbee devices

#

Plug the stick in and start πŸ˜…

#

You can also go for Wi-Fi bulbs that are supported by Home Assistant

#

You can check for An integration of certain brand on their website

#

But wouldn't recommend any cloud service πŸ˜…

#

Mini pc!

#

Both of those questions don't have a straight forward answer and are "it depends"

left glen
#

You can also look on eBay for a refurbished Dell OptiPlex

#

Yeah that's +- correct

#

Main powered Zigbee devices will mainly extend your range as Zigbee is a mesh protocol

#

They'll act as routers

#

Regular devices are mainly battery powered devices

#

the coordinator is the Sonoff stick

#

Yep they're main powered so will normally work as routers

#

No worries, but as ESH stated regarding the device to run Home Assistant on; there isn't a real answer as it depends on what you want (later). Maybe you want to run something else on the PC, etc
