I'm working on a faceplate and I used dupli-color gray filler primer and upol bondo to get the faceplate nice and smooth prior to coating with some Upol gloss black. When I coated it with gloss black I expected it to lay much smoother then it did, I did a light then medium coat of the gloss black and it came out looking like this. Any ideas what went wrong?
#Gloss black having a weird texture to it.

I think you might need a heavier coat of black and that will fix it, or add a clear coat.
I was thinking that adding a clear coat under it might fix it because it would give it a smoother surface to lay out on but then I thought it was already really smooth with primer only, A thicker coat I think will just cause it to run in this scenario, my current idea and I seem to be seeing results in another piece I am working on is that I forgot to add soap to my water while wet sanding. seems to be fixing my orange peel issue on a part of the chest I am working on.
Interesting, are you not cleaning the piece off before painting? Even after wet sanding?
Adding a clear coat will smooth it out ready for more black if needed as sometimes the clear will be enough for a nice metallic finish.
Yes i cleaned it before painting with isopropyl alcohol. I thought that adding a clear coat right after primer might help but wasnt sure because of The way The black looked on its own. Ill try it another piece And see how it looks.
Sorry I mean add the clear over the black, it will save the piece you have. Primer I always leave an hour or two before painting a colour layer.
yeah these parts had about 4 hours dry time, Im trying to combat the orange peel atm, would you say I should clear coat over gloss black on the faceplate and then hit it will some more gloss black? and if so should I wet sand it as it is to try and get it smooth again?
Try just the clear coat to start and see how it looks, if it’s not as glossy as you want, then add more gloss black after the clear has fully cured.
