Hey everyone. So I’m new to painting props and was just wondering how to know what base colour will give off the effect I want. I don’t right now have a specific colour but just in general? Many thanks!

Depends what finish you want in the end but generally.
Black gloss base for metallics.
Silver gloss for softer finish on metallics.
Other than that darker bases give deeper colours and light bases give a lighter tone.
In all honesty the bases are most important with metallics, flat paints are not so reactive to the bases it’s more to do with how heavy you paint and lighter layers in my opinion always give a better finish.

I test. I paint actual things and see what I like. Empty filament spools can make a good wheel of combinations: Red over gold, Red over black, and so on. Or if you have a failed print finish it anyway. Its a tue test of your sanding, priming and finally the paint combinations.
