check ur shortcuts in edit>preferences if u still have the shortcut on *
and check if u have sth selected when pressing.. maybe its putting the marker on some layer way down

I'd go to keyboard shortcuts then search up add marker and drag it to the letter x then you can easily press x and it'll make u a marker as u listen or watch
