enable to the auto-save so even if it crashes u have ur work in there and close it and open it like nothing pre-composing helps out a lot

try rendering as Quicktime or AVI

and then make it to mp4 or whatever through Media Encoder or HandBrake

set it max to 30 and frequently go to edit>purge>all media and disk cache and it will stop it from crashing constantly

also if you have a lower gpu i'd suggest right clicking on the task bar and opening task manager every time you open ae and close applications running in the background especially any adobe processors not being used. if you have a preview render issue as well go to edit>preferences> memory and performance and do this

clearing temp files on your pc should make it run faster as well
