ram usage when preview literally nothing

I am pretty much as new as they come and Im having problems with ram usage in the program.
im trying to edit something pretty basic, just syncing some simple visuals to music with a video in the background and its using 24 gigs of ram after 5 seconds of preview and then it crashes and i lose everything. What am i doing wrong?
