Hey fam,

This is the fastest I’ve ever written a song so my ears are shot right now and I could use some objective feedback. Specifically looking for feedback on:

  • the mix down / leveling / balance of the different sounds
  • the pace and arrangement
  • sound design
  • general interest and dance-ability

Thanks gang!

# sturdy venture Hey fam, This is the fastest I’ve ever written a song so my ears are shot right...

wooo new major trouble track

  1. nothing sounds out to me with the mixing, really good in my opinion

  2. the track is arranged well, its a nice long breakdown for a moment, but the buildup is a little short for me (but it really does depend on what type of a song you want, something more fast paced or slower paced)

  3. the sound design is nice, but the some of the saws that come in could use some short reverb

  4. nice vibe to it! something i could drop in a set (like a lot of your other tracks)

Once through the initial breakdown and about halfway into the track, I had a curiosity about the vocal/voice sample

...and then you did the Robo thing on the back end a bit which kinda confirmed some of what I was curiously considering

Have you thought about attempting a bit of voice/vocal manipulation for this one? Like in ways that Fred Again might do, although you might tamp down some of his eccentricities with it a bit more to suit your natural style. Lol

Tbf, I only listened on my phone internal speaker and not even on full volume

But that was my initial "Rick Rubin laying on a couch and asking a curious question" style "Producer" feedback that popped into my head (which as you probably know will more often not work out than it will, but can be fun to try)

If you'd like me to send a few public YouTube videos of Fred type vocal manipulation tactics as inspiration (for this or future efforts) just let me know
They're not always for me and my style and so I've never really put them on any of my stuff, but I suspect I'll try to put it on at least 1 of my new efforts in the next couple years (as a way to add interest/intrigue without having to alter much of the non-vocal song structure/arrangement/etc) 👍

# sturdy venture If you’ve got videos to reference, I’d def check them out. I’m not a huge Fred f...

Yeah was mostly referring to the vocal chops and the mapping/chaining around your existing structures (mostly the drums) to add interest from just the vocal elements without having to adjust much at all, if any, on the non-vocal stuff.

You're working on standard tech house so the drones and Melodic stuff either isn't needed or can be muted in smaller sections just to provide a tiny bit of texture.
You also don't really need the breakbeat elements either as that's not the patterned drums and percussion you're already working with here. But, again, even just in tiny bits of it to map into additional muted vocals/voicing might spice your track without altering what you already have.

Tldr Fred's obviously not the only Producer to get creative in vocals and voicing (we both know James does this too on many of his songs) but it's like shorthand for adding texture or spicyness to raise audience interest in a small section or two of what you already have just to keep folks plugged in for the duration of your track 👍

Here's a few YouTube videos for inspiration that would either need to be massively tamped down to fit within your existing framework or might spark some ideas for you on future productions:
