#Multiplayer Open World Lag Spikes

I am playing peer to peer with a friend and we are seeing occasional lag spikes. At first, the world ran fine, but as we developed our base more and completed missions, the spikes became more frequent and more severe. The spikes don't appear to be related to graphics as reducing all of the settings doesn't seem to impact the performance. The game slows to a crawl, to about 5-10fps for at least 20 seconds or so. Proximity to our base also doesn't seem to impact this behaviour, it seems like it occurs at somewhat random intervals every 10-20mins or so.

Has anybody else encountered this issue before, any tips on how to address it?

This is a known issue with big bases in the open world, making it virtually unplayable after a certain point. I suspect the devs are working on optimizations because there are many complaints about this. Some people attribute it to problems with the Unreal 4 engine, /shrug.
