If the game hasn't synced with steam yet you might be able to download a backup from the steam cloud.
Not sure how you force it to do that though

https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage shows what info Steam has so you can redownload if something goes wrong with Steam Cloud

@vital needle hope you have more luck than I have, files on steam cloud were same as on pc so characters are gone for me.

Testing a fix. Supposedly you change to the Centralized 1.2.27 beta. Start the game, start a new exploration prospect, immediately finish the prospect by leaving in the drop pod, take all your items off your character and back into your loadout space. Quit the game and change back to the Live version of the game... Then your character should be back?
Be sure it's the starting noob Argos Exploration prospect so you can immediately leave.

Sadly this did not work for me. I don't mind having to reacquire the items but I had almost 1k exotics I was saving when I drifted into other games that are gone. 😦 Apparently if I'd picked it back up a day earlier there would've been a migrate button? Alas.
