I want to add my railway url to a custom root domain, it asks to fill in 'cname' for type and '@' for name and the url for value. However, at my domain hosting i receive this error when i try to do this: 'A @ record cannot be a CNAME'. Any ideas? the www custom domain is working.

In your Cpanel, where you have a cname record for www.yourdomain.com, replace the value with the one your project on railway is giving you. Then wait for a while

that is not working

#

i have a domain name: audiogest.app

#

www.audiogest.app is working because i can fill in 'www' in the name column and type 'cname' in the dns record and enter the url of railway

#

but for audiogest.app (without www) i can't. my domain hosting says i cannot have '@' as a name in a 'cname' dns record. i also cannot have a url in the 'a' record with name '@'.

it looks like your dns provider doesn't support root level cname aliasing, you will have to switch to nameservers that do, like cloudflare
