#Radiology Retreat

I think the maths and physics behind MRIs are so damn cool.
I'll have to look into that again.
MRIs: For when a CT just won't do
My ex husband got asked to leave the MRI room when I was getting a scan done because they were worried the metal in his tattoo ink would heat up. That's when I was like, ok this machine is powerful AF
I'm in this picture and I don't like it.

Didn't Mythbusters tackle that one?
oh yeah, my nan had to get frequent MRIs when she had myeloma and she said the magnet Made Her Feel Weird
not claustrophobic at all, the magnet was just so strong it enacted a Physical Sensation
when we vet MRIs at our hospo we have to check for any potential metal filings or remnants in the eyes from previous manual labour type work 🫣
In the eyes or in the eyes? 🫣
like IN the eyes, tiny fragments can get left in there, non-symptomatic unless theres, u kno, a massive super powered magnet
Ages ago I did look into applying to become a radiology tech, but due to circumstances that didn't happen. Which is why I have a soft spot for radiology. Appreciate this retreat
That is still terrifying
tbf not as bad as the whole "any large metal in the room tends to become a very fast human-seeking missile" thing
that poor kid who got like, mulched by an oxygen canister that got launched into the scanner while he was being scanned ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
CTs are cool too

A radiographer working at a hospital in Vejle, Denmark filmed the inside of a CT scanner while it was operating at full speed.
The fascinating footage, captured by Morten Hjordt, shows the scanner spinning around at a great pace, barely making any noise.
Hjordt told Newsflare: "I work full time as a radiologic technologist (radiographer) at a ...
WHOAAAAA
I had a MRI a few weeks ago and was surprised that dental braces were no problem. They just distorted the immediate area around them.

yep! non-ferromagnetic metal isnt A Hazard but it can heat up and distort images, so there tends to be rules around the strength of the MRI thats used when metal is present
oh, also, would anyone like to see MY BONES from when i broke my hand at 16
had pins
I really do, but also I very much don't.

I guess you're not welcome in r/neverbrokeabone
lost that privilege at 7 when i lost a fight with a swing
Here's my head. These is like a reflex against sharing medical information, but I don't expect anyone to be able to dox me through this, and it's a normal brain, apparently... https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/987009222132781117/1164581403996983429/image.png?ex=6568a5f3&is=655630f3&hm=31166eb64aa06ffdbc7df98f78f0d843c51f7db232eb9b232f1337afa88d9a18&
10/10 you do have a brain, very good, thats an important organ
Oh, hi Kevin, nice to see you here! I'd recognise that brain shape anywhere!
Yes. I'm waiting for someone to ask me if I have a brain, so I show can them this.
Your brainstem (?) looks like a cute little seahorse 🫣
Are we all secretly piloted by seahorses?
I just can't understand how they were able to do, or even derive, the math required when they first invented rotational scanners (or what the proper term is). Good thing conspiracy people are so intellectually disinterested because that's ahead of its time imo.
It's basically massive convolution matrices right?
Hmmm, I get the impression some of the sulci are quite large, but I'm more familiar with fMRI than regular MRI. The ventricles appear to be fine tho
I don't like reddit, but technically I qualify. (I have been missing a few since I was about ten, though.)
Sadly no radiological evidence.
Hey, bone theft is a serious problem. It's not a joke.
We have less bones as we age as they fuse together
Also I do qualify as well, I never even sprained an ankle
It's not that, I have three fewer than the standard 206 - they were surgically removed.
Oh
I have tattoos and have had multiple MRIs. Never had any issues. Maybe it's older tattoos...? Although some of mine are 20+ years old.
This is like some wild Rorschach test because I swear I see a woman with a big butt holding her hands with a bajillion fingers out in front of her
Oh, snap
That's what I saw too, but I thought I was the only one.
Maybe she's shooting lightning from her hands, in which case, @plush orbit I think you might have some dormant magical powers
That's the cool interpretation
DON'T SAY THAT! You have to keep in mind that the insufficiently ossified (like @rough sapphire) are present 🫣
I blurt laughed and scared my cat. He is glaring at me so hard.
HEY IT WAS CRUSHED BY A HUGE WOODEN SASH WINDOW
MY HAND IS PERFECTLY SUFFICIENTLY OSSIFIED
No judgement, they took a chunk of my pelvis out when I was younger. So perhaps I am the insufficiently ossified one. What a burden I suffer!
(I do not suffer at all, at least not from that, only from the crippling burden of life under late stage capitalism laugh/cry)
Nah, that's just normal depression. Everyone gets that.
This MRI also happened in....2004 so it could have been an older machine?
Possibly before the Myth busters episode? Haha
So I mentioned it above. But I would love to learn to code a simple MRI decoder
It's sci-fi in the 60s, but now I expect it to be a single liner in scipy
(it's ok if you include the imports with a semicolon)
Neuro research?
Yeah, I'm a psychologist and a computational neuroscientist
