Small arms are much higher pitch and faster and artillery is much deeper and regular intervals and then stop. I'll see if I can clip a clear bit with small arms fire and then one with artillery.

Something that is more of an observation than anything IDF & Hamas are still fighting in a similar place to last week, I wonder how much ground they've actually gained

considering this is technically a counterinsurgency operation rather than a conventional war, I don't think it's helpful to conceive of the war in how much ground each side has gained

right now it appears the IDF is on a search and destroy basis which is why they've built a large number of FOBs to operate from, Afghanistan style

holding ground is probably not the IDF's main concern atm

additionally info from within the battlezone is virtually nonexistant, which when combined with the search and destroy nature of the operation means that we really have virtually no clue what the tactical situation is at any given moment. we've probably been spoiled for that sort of information by the Ukraine war where geolocation has more or less given us a General's view of the war down to the smallest of units. that's just not possible in this one I reckon

oh no I meant more in the tactical sense- of course the Netanyahu government has made indications that they intend to occupy Gaza for some time, but in the here and now as the invasion is in progress, actually going street by street, house by house Bakhmut style does not appear to be the IDF's modus operandi. furthermore, 'taking and holding ground' is complicated by the tunnel network and surprise ambushes from the rear, hence why the IDF has placed such a large emphasis on building what are essentially little castles in Gaza to sally forth from and return to

That's a 155MM illumination round. It gets fired into the air, fuze detonates, and it propels a flare and parachute out the bottom after popping the baseplate off. That's why the base is hollow, and there's no blast damage. @abstract quest is right about about the yellow artillery round he posted a picture of, as that's Israeli's 155 illum round

It's a mechanical time fuze, so they could adjust the setting. But at least from the two pictures from Baras and the one from Mallers, there's no fire damage I see that would come from the flare being popped out if that occured after wards. The parachute is a noticeable size

Also trying to use an illum round as a warning doesn't make sense for a couple reasons. They have a SOP for warning Gaza citizens already, and doing a new more obscure way wouldn't serve as an actual warning. Additionally, if the illum round fuze hits the ground, it could just dud from the fuze getting messed up on impact.
@delicate mural The illum rounds are sealed at the factory, the only thing they would be changing is the Fuze/Fuze settings.

If the round had functioned at or near the ground, you'd have some fire from the flare, and you'd have a parachute. This is a parachute from a US illum round, but the construction is probably similar with Israeli Illum rounds. If anyone has any footage above the hosptial I'd just look for any slowly/quickly decending flares.

Yes. It's a significant hunk of metal falling very fast from the sky. That impacting a car, whose frame in turn impacts several people is totally plausible. There's a chance the illum round could have functioned on the ground rather than in the air as designed, but based off the one picture of the car here I don't see anything to indicate that rather than the shell just hitting the car.

That is a slowed down video of it falling. The stories before and after aren't pleasant to watch but that one only shows the object falling. It does not show the impact.

No the baseplate is attached with just some shear pins. The Fuze (at the top) sets off a small amount of explosives which pushes the flare and parachute towards the base, breaking the shear pins. If the container exploded you'd be making shrapnel, which if you're wanting to illuminate above or near friendly positions you'd be risking much more.

Yeah, at this point I do not think the Chiosphotos.gr is actually live despite the timestamp. Steve of AFTV has stated he pays to have the feed he broadcasts so I'm gonna go with his being the accurate feed. Another way to compare would be when a news station simultaneously broadcasts feed from that angle.

Additionally, this long standing landmark is no longer viewable in the AFTV feed which makes me think it was recently bombed. It's possible it is obscured by smoke, but I think it may be gone!

I think it's fairly safe to say that livestream footage from within Gaza is pretty dead. the only consistent streams I've seen is from the Gaza border, I think the situation within the strip has become too dangerous for such streams any longer. it's a miracle they lasted for as long as they did, and there's every chance a stream or two may reappear briefly, but I doubt we'll see the same long form coverage previously shown

@wanton flare here's a previous discussion with internal picture. No it likely functioned. Can't say for sure without seeing the base, and potential the Fuze could have sheared off on impact. But the Fuze functions, ignites a small expelling charge that pushes the candle put the base. But the shell is still intact and falls to the ground. At the time I thought the Israeli round might have been different, but it's just an Israeli production of the M485 series.
