Gabon Post Election Coup Attempt
Thanks for creating a post for it, currently looking for any evidence that confirms the reports of shootings in Libreville

There's been quite a bit of anti-France/Western messages since the coup. This is a situation alike Niger in the sense that the demoted party was friendly to France and the West, providing resources (uranium and cocoa especially) and France having a military presence, but the difference that this was effectively a family rule and the elections clearly a hoax and freedoms actively repressed. It will be interesting to see international reactions to it
I’m displeased with coups automatically denounced. Guinea for instance— Alpha Condé was disrespectful of human rights. In 2021 he was deposed, and those who condemned the putsch were Western countries as well as Russia and China.
It was a reaction different from Malian coup (from the latter two), because Condé became a partner and was abandoned by France.
I don’t know if Western countries will have the same reaction as Condé’s ouster.
Will move to #chit-chat for discussion on Guinea
Yup, will reply to that there, let's focus here regarding Gabon (:

"On this day, August 30th, 2023, we, the united Defense and Security Forces within the Committee for Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) and on behalf of the Gabonese people and as guarantors of institutional protection, have decided to safeguard peace by ending the current regime. Accordingly, the general elections of August 26th, 2023, along with the manipulated results, are hereby nullified. Borders are closed until further notice. All Republican institutions, including the Government, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, and the Gabonese Election Council, are dissolved. We urge the population, the communities of sister nations residing in Gabon, as well as Gabonese in the diaspora, to remain calm and serene. We reaffirm our commitment to upholding Gabon's obligations to the national and international community. Gabonese people, this marks our journey towards prosperity at last. May God and the spirits of our ancestors bless Gabon. Honor and loyalty to the homeland. Thank you."
⚠️ Confirmed: Metrics show a partial restoration of internet connectivity in #Gabon, days after a nationwide blackout was imposed during elections.
This morning, military officers said they had taken power to end President Bongo's leadership.

More images from Libreville, where billboards supporting Ali Bongo's candidacy are defaced by demonstrators.
More from Libreville where hundred are in the street singing and celebrating the coup in the country.

Does this help or hurt the legitimate government's cause?
General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema declared interim president

That's interesting : there is no russian flag visible.
There weren't in Niger either until they started showing up
I’m waiting for the reactions of the likes of Jean Ping and Albert Ondo Ossa
What I just dislike with the coup is that it went first without popular mobilisation.
i think that's fair
and.. yeah, from my limited perspective i see why they'd have cause to want to remove this guy
enough that i'm not going to immediately condemn this

He said that he's not yet declaring himself as head of state, it's an ongoing debate https://vxtwitter.com/brazzanews/status/1696912161472151922
Following the arrest of Ali Bongo's son, 4 billion FCFA in cash were found at the home of the son's chief of staff, Ian Ghislain.
Russian reaction is concern: https://www.businesslive.co.za/amp/bd/world/africa/2023-08-30-russia-concerned-about-gabon-coup/
Moscow will monitor the situation in what it regards as a friendly African country

While the #Gabon coup is ongoing, a quick reminder that Ali #Bongo and his clan currently own real estate in the US, Canada and France, worth US$40 millions.

From the same thread, but putting it here separately as this one is not about the Bongos but one of the coup heads, Nguema https://twitter.com/EmmanFre/status/1696918503775744240
To be fair, this coup doesn't really make Gabon any more authoritarian than it already was
That sounds a relief
The reactions I got are:
UNSG: condemn
Ondo Ossa: no comment until situation evolves
https://apnews.com/article/gabon-mutiny-elections-power-a61d03963f75ae93ba85a4ba7eec3c71
The headline however differed from the report in this article, where Alternance 2023 thanks the army against an “electoral coup” by Ali Bongo and wishes the former recognise Ondo Ossa as winner
UK: condemnation (https://www.barrons.com/news/britain-condemns-unconstitutional-military-coup-in-gabon-b65dd5c0)
USA: no direct condemnation (https://abcnews.go.com/International/gabon-coup-military-president-election/story?id=102672748)
