Kicking this off:
Recently leaked Pentagon documents have exposed the presence of a Russian mercenary group operating in Haiti, undetected by the United States. This Wagner Group made headlines in 2022 when its members allegedly killed a defector by beating him with a sledgehammer and offered assistance to the Haitian government in tackling violent gangs. Accordi...

I feel like at this point there should be a wagner working group or something...they've got fingers in so many pies it's hard to keep track
at least in haiti it sounds like they're operating as a security force (compared with africa where they're rumored to be after natural resources)
Actually, that is a very wise suggestion. The MO in Haiti is the same. Any contribution to local security and stability comes with the collateral to obtain access to resources. Natural resources in Haiti have been significantly underdeveloped and there are varying reports on the value of deposits in the ground and offshore that have yet to be exploited.
Worth just as much and more efficient in the meantime is the flow of contraband Northwards and supporting transnational crime. Predictably, Russia and China are looking at Haiti.
@grim kite @warped minnow - This is a rather wise suggestion
You're welcome!
@grim kite very good idea! I'm glad we have a Haiti thread now.

Exclusive: The Biden administration is changing tack on Haiti, all but abandoning its proposal for a multilateral force that would have fought gangs in Port-au-Prince to push instead for a more traditional U.N. peacekeeping mission. (w/ @Jacquiecharles) https://t.co/K3H2enldjy

The U.N. estimated in December that gangs controlled 60% of Haiti’s capital, but nowadays most on the streets of Port-au-Prince say that number is closer to 100%.
While gangs profit from the chaos, at least 155,000 people have been forced to flee. https://t.co/fwdVD5UvIQ
From my understanding Trudeau has refused to lead the international force for peacekeeping in Haiti
I would not be surprised if it comes to light in the coming months that Wagner has been guarding the coveted Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Port-au-Prince.

A quote from a daily travel warning email that lands in my inbox - this from today.
"Haiti (Security threat level - 5): From 14 to 19 April 2023, clashes between armed rival gangs occurred in Cite Soleil, located approximately 3 km (2 mi) southeast of central Port-au-Prince. At least 70 people were killed and 40 more were injured. The conflict forced the closure of public services – including health facilities and schools. In addition, many residents were unable to access necessities such as food and potable water."

Anyone know of any recent and interesting datasets to scrape/analyze on Haiti? I know credible data is pretty hard to come by, even UNICEF doesn't do their MICS survey in Haiti.
Update: here's a 330-page report on the impact of the 2021 earthquake, though it seems to have countrywide data on a whole range of topics. https://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/---ed_emp/documents/publication/wcms_831133.pdf
And here's a helpful list of databases .

(x-post) here's a recent project of mine about gangs and displacement in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. https://bennett-gpj.github.io/Gangs-and-Displacement-in-Haiti/
The U.S. is ordering non-emergency staff at its embassy in Port-au-Prince to leave Haiti, after an escalation in gang violence this week led dozens of Haitian families to seek refuge outside of the embassy compound in the Tabarre neighborhood of the capital.

Hello! I'm looking for datasets showing the allocation of donor money/development aid in Haiti, especially related to projects aiming to tackle deforestation. Any recommendations?
Does anyone have any good resources for mapping on gang-held territory in Port-Au-Prince and wider Haiti? The only ones of note that I have come across are on https://twitter.com/MakyavelStudios
I did some data work on this here, the map part relied on someone else's work (second link). https://bennett-hanson.github.io/Gangs-and-Displacement-in-Haiti/
At least six journalists have been kidnapped and released in Haiti over the past eight months as gangs have grown in strength since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, with the groups forming alliances and calling for the armed overthrow of the government. Since February, CPJ has documented the murder of one journalist, several re...
