Just to make sure I understand @clear thicket :

Current behavior: returns an error
Future behavior: either return an error, or return a lazy ID without error?

yes, that is right.

so i am not sure what is the best result with new change. incase we want to return an error, I also need to find the right place to add the validation when running the "ID" function. it seems it may be a generic function for all dagql types.
