I think there is definitely a lot of overlapping ideas here, we are not building toward this spec right now, but I think a lot of the work happening with #daggernauts will make Dagger an even more obvious fit for use as a local development and testing environment.
Would I actually benefit from DevContainers if all could be done from Dagger?
Could you tell me more about what underlying problem you're hoping to solve?
I want to improve https://github.com/goharbor/harbor in two aspects.
- Git rid of the Makefile
- Make it super easy for new contributors to spin up local Harbor make changes and create PRs.
There some features in devcontainers that dagger probably won't ever have, but I think the overlap might be enought for us to only choose dagger
This would be awesome to see, I agree with you on the latter. How can I help? 😄
If you have not already, I would recommend checking out Zenith Modules https://docs.dagger.io/zenith/ - this is still early access but I think is especially well suited for things like this because it introduces things like dagger up which allows you to run something as a service - I think the perfect use case for local development. https://docs.dagger.io/zenith/reference/979596/cli/#dagger-up
