Hi,
We're not there yet, but your logic is true.
We want to integrate more into GitLab so we could create substeps visible by GitLab (and other CI tooling system as well). For now, it's not the priority as we're moving full speed on the cloak project (https://dagger.io/cloak). But clearly, we want a top integration.

Thanks for the reply. In the meantime while those features aren't here do you have any advice on how you would structure it?

Yes, sorry.
I would do a top action that run subaction.
You can always do a: dagger do topAction subaction to run the subaction
