Hey guys whatsup. What better than to seek the advice of my peers? Short intro, I'm 29. Just graduated BS in CS at a lesser known state school. I've had two internships under my belt at a defense contractor (was in the military before school).

I'm slated to start my Masters program (top 10 school) next month in NYC. But I've also been accepted in to a research fellowship at MIT (Doing ML/AI).

The fellowship runs for about 4 months, and will push my graduate program back by an entire year.

I have not yet started leetcoding so I'm not quite ready to start the interview train (I thought it would come a tad later in time).

Being that i'm 29, I don't have any debts, but neither do I have any savings as well.. do you think I should be delaying starting my "real real" career yet another year?

I've really just been so f****ing lucky. Like I'm not the calibre of person who gets into schools/programs like this. I really promise. I opened leetcode and couldn't do the first problem. I am not a. specialty in any language or AI/ML at all.

I keep wondering when my luck will run out, so I really want to take all the time an opportunity possible.

The other side is crying at the idea of having nothing to do for the other 8 months of the coming year, no savings, and delaying the start of my career into my early 30s. (The time i though i'd be setting aside to date, get married, have kids etc.).

Any thoughts? DMs or public in this thread are all welcome. Thanks in advance.

Thats an interesting point to make. I don't know how much the fellowship will improve my career.

I don't know how much of it is just achievement hunting vs. avoiding starting my real career
