Hi S,

Thank you so much for letting me know! I appreciate your help and encouragement through the entire process. I would like to submit feedback for one of my interviewers, if possible.

I had a good experience interviewing with C and R. I feel like I was able to connect with both of them and they exemplified what I had thought the Capital One culture was like. They seemed genuinely interested in talking about their Capital One experiences, and getting to know me, the candidate. Talking to them made me more excited for the opportunity to work for Capital One. They made me feel like Capital One was a place where I could thrive, and whose values I would be proud to exemplify. However, N was a different story.

N was my Technical Interviewer, and was much younger than the other two. Right off the bat, N seemed disinterested. He gave a short introduction almost as if he was reading off a script, asked me to introduce myself, then jumped into presenting the question. As per the Capital One prep resources, I asked clarifying questions about the problem to make sure that I understood the problem correctly. Every time I did so, it was as if he didn't hear me at first, before responding half-heartedly in an almost derogatory manner. I understand that the problems I asked were basic, but if I had gotten my initial understanding wrong I would have wasted more time coming up with a wrong solution. Also as per Capital One's prep resources, I talked my way through my thinking process and came up with multiple solutions, and talked about each solution's tradeoffs. The entire duration, he stayed silent. This in itself wasn't necessarily a problem, but I was getting a little bit uncomfortable. When I eventually asked what he thought about my proposed solutions, and if the one I thought was best was sufficient or if I should try to come up with a better solution, he replied with "I don't know, you tell me." How is this acceptable?

Understandably, this put me off. Talking to him was like talking to a wall. Except, at least a wall echoes back your words. My experience with N was completely contrary to what I was told to expect from Capital One's Technical Interview. The problems themselves weren't hard, but I constantly felt like I wasn't able to reach the level of communication that N was expecting. So I felt like I had to keep rambling until I got some sort of feedback. Halfway through the interview, I think that I finally realized that perhaps N wasn't looking for a discussion with my thought process, but for me to code in silence. Or, perhaps he was more engaged with some other website on the side rather than his interviewee. I have no way of knowing. Learning to maintain composure and perform in the face of adversity and uncooperative co-workers may be a valuable skill, but I don't think that was the skill I should have been tested on.

I'm not sending this email in hopes that it will reverse my decision, but I hope that other applicants will get a better experience. Please make sure that your interviewers actually want to be there, and require that they attend the same interview preparation workshops that you encourage your applicants to go to.

so many companies have those kinds of interviewers and it just puts off the entire interviewee for the rest of the rounds
