I feel like as long as you explained both approaches clearly (that shows you understand both) and the interviewer does not give you a lot of hints other than pointing you to another direction then it should be fine

@mellow heath sorry following up hella late but basically i was kinda confused on how to make it simpler at first, and then he pasted in the format he wanted me to fill out with all the if statements and stuff LOL and i was like ohhh and then i got it immediately
