It's not about number of internships/projects, there's more contributing factors outside of that. The other person also could have been someone internal who the job posting has been opened for, seen that happen.

I worked at intel for an internship. Intel is currently in a really bad spot and internal candidates are prioritized now. Even internal candidates are having difficulty finding jobs. They are still doing layoffs and unless you in the HW side, you are not safe.
