I’m a long term resident (seventh year now) but not a citizen. And the one-year contracts mean yearly visa renewals, too. It’s hard to break out of unless you marry a citizen.

I would have thought Japan was similar to Korea in terms of culture around how teachers are treated/respected

Yeah, they’re fairly respected, I guess, but it’s also a lot of pressure and weekend work and 12+ hour days for not great salaries, which I don’t love. šŸ˜… My older coworkers are always exhausted and haggard, and I don’t want that as my future for a job I only really took because I didn’t know what else to do.
