OK. So font stuff.

  1. Theory of drawing and lettering. Font design is very much about craft. My type design professor recommended buying books by Michael Harvey (second hand - they are all out of print). In one of the books, there is a large neutral sans and serif alphabet. He encouraged me to grab tracing paper and draw on top of the letters and fill them in every day. I did this and after a few months (did 3 letters a day) i could say i could start to see things in type and letterforms that I didn't before.
  2. Drawing with Type by Karen Cheng is the #1 book for learning differences and corrections in type.
  3. A type design program. Illustrator is crap for paths once you've worked with a font design program. I recommend Glyphs; which is both popular, has amazing plug-ins and a wealth of tutorials.

Don't underestimate step 1 here. Type design is all about the eye, and it comes through subconscious learning as much as conscious.
