Interesting opinion but I respectfully disagree.

Design is simply problem solving. And if you're doing it right, you should be conducting research. This is extremely important because you need to understand target audiences in-depth. This is a highly empathetic field compared to other jobs.

Also businesses dont value aesthetics. They value solutions that align with their business and target outcomes.

Great opinion but I don't see how you disagree with me.

I agree with volt; you learn a lot of different ways to do things by being in a different bubble.

You could design something for pets and I bet you've missed something, no matter how good you are. The person who worked with pets? They have a massive advantage.

I mean I do think designers can have more empathy and can be great at design without any other professional experience but I'm seeing a lot of design for design sake in the world today without solving any real problems. I will blame businesses for this too as they are attempting to extract money, time, and attention from their customers and leverage design and aesthetics to do this.

Also I disagree about aesthetics. The flooring, fragrances put throughout the air vents, etc. is all carefully thought of in any large hotel. Every aspect will be considered. That is just one example but businesses care about a lot, because those are solutions to making money in the same way a nice site is

To say that businesses don't value aesthetics is likely more of businesses utilize aesthetics in order to achieve their business goals. But we are part of the business and it's exactly that "othering" of design that leads people to leverage design and designers to create rather than solve problems, to harm rather than to cure, and to further divide people from each other and meaningful purpose in life. But open to different opinions on the subject.

You also meet people who can offer you jobs lol. Totally unrelated but still

I've had a few high paying job offers from customers

Worked in IT support, went to night school, met my design mentor, still doing design 16 years later. Kind of like that.
