I'd say the best thing to do when starting out is to be more generalist, people will say you need to niche down, but reality is that that advice works well when you're a senior and you've had experience in multiple industries/disciplines - when you're just starting out, you will likely find yourself being the wearer of many hats - a client of mine has contracted me to help with web design, but I also do illustrations, user research, usability testing and much more.

But you definitely should at least focus on one thing, like don't be saying you can do email marketing as well as prototyping etc. Graphic design is enough.

I haven't seen much success with behance and other freelancing stuff personally but I know some people use it religiously and love it. I find its much easier to just put yourself out there and talk to people where they are - and that's usually LinkedIn and Instagram (for graphic designers).
