there's a ton to unpack here ofc. I have a few questions, not based off experience, but just to pressure test some of your assumptions:

  • 14 hours a day sounds frankly ludicrous. why that much?
  • what does your friend mean when they say being obscenely good isn't enough? would it not be the case that offshore candidates are hired for cheaper because they can replace someone of equal skill level? but if you're so obscenely good that you provide value that outshines 99% of talent, wouldn't that give you a humungous advantage?
  • what would you hope to learn as a developer that gives you a competitive advantage?

ignore the thread name btw, I think Discord auto-filled that... FrogHmm

  1. I used to play competitive fps games and one thing I learned was that I could game longer than anyone. That is sort of my strength, that I can put more hours into things. Even as a kid I would wake up at 5am, build lego all day and go to sleep at a late time. I figure why not play to my strengths?
  2. I think they mean this isn't like gaming or swimming where I could beat the odds by being better. I may lose simply because someone will charge a lot less in another country.
  3. Another language, more frameworks, and be able to solve problems a lot easier.

  1. more power to you, but do you even work 14 hours a day on your job these days? is web dev as addicting as an fps?
  2. ok, but my question still stands
  3. can you be more precise? what problems would you solve easier? also are you looking to become a dev or be a designer with web dev skills?

  1. I used to work 16 hours at my last job. Or do you mean, does a developer work 14 hours? They might not, but I think if I throw more hours at something, I can learn more. Hopefully... It's not as addicting as FPS but that's okay.
  2. You have a point and might be right. I hope that's right.
  3. I'm a developer, looking to be a better one

Can you renew the open work permit while you figure out the PR situation?

Also if you need a degree, OCAD, UofT and Waterloo are all well regarded industry options but OCAD is tricky to get into without a strong portfolio.
