Hey, thanks for the insight! I do agree with your statement that they would have a more flushed out idea, but I also think there is still a possibility that the designs I submit can get used since they currently have no designers on the team. They can already have the idea but not the designs.

I think part of what doesn't sit well with me is that they told me they got rid of all their designers when they didn't need them anymore so just based on how they treat designers I'm not that crazy about them. Anyway, great pov too! Thanks for sharing (:

No designer on staff, likely... they just don't understand design well enough to realize it's not something they should do. They're just not really design mature

Because of this, asking them for an alternative problem is also going to be rough because they don't know how to make a good design question

A long while back, my company was thinking about being acquired by twitter. The acquisition team had me go in for two interviews. One was where they had no designers on staff and only eng/product. So the engineering team ran the whiteboarding similar to an engineering exercise. And since they don't really understand design well enough to think of good design problems. Only in relation to past things they've done. So they asked me a lot of questions on problems they had faced in the past.

I absolutely do not think they were using my ideas at all. And I did engage with them since from their perspective, they had no idea how to run a design exercise. Heck they didn't even have a portfolio review/presentation and I mentioned how unconventional their interview was

That being said, it doesn't sound like an interview I would want to do. I think any job can be a stepping stone, but it's up to you to decide if it's somewhere you actually want to devote time into

Thanks for sharing your experience Hannah! I guess given my current career trajectory as a junior ux designer, I wouldn't really want to be stuck in that environment either

Kind of an inconvenient truth is juniors don't really have a lot of power like prototype said earlier. It's basically you do the prompt or you don't get the job. My suggestions are ways to push back but you'd definitely come off worse

Even for seniors/+. I don't have the time to tailor an interview process for a single candidate.
