#Need help troubleshooting my UART to USB connections.

I've bought two of the ADAFruit USB to UART cables that you have listed in your guide (the exact amazon link) and they do not work. I'll go through what steps I went through to troubleshoot:

  • I have a functional UART to USB board that isn't the ADAFruit cable that works fine and I've tested each arduino I'm trying to use. They connect instantly within PokeAutomation.
  • I have the Silicon Labs 210x drivers installed as that is what my working cable uses and it's what these ADAFruit cables are using as well.
  • I have tried the cables on a separate computer with no joy.
  • I have tested continuity of the dupont cables with my multimeter and they seem to work. I have also tried different dupont cables (that were also later tested good) and they did not work either.

I'm not exactly sure where to go from here besides initiating a refund and just buying more of the first board which doesn't look good, but works. The amazon listing states that the cables use the Silicon Labs chip and other recent reviews seem to reflect that. I would post the link to the listing but I'm unsure if it's against the rules to post the link. Will do if requested. The PokeAutomation application is just stuck at "connecting" so I believe that either TX or RX isn't working. I also don't get anything back from putty when connecting directly with the board closed (and PokeAuto).

Is there something easy I'm missing? I find it unlikely that I'd get two bad cables but I guess wierder things have happened. I also forgot to mention but these are all plugged into one machine, are there any conflicts with having 2+ UART to USB cables plugged into one machine?

I tested them separate but I just don't know, I'm at my wits end, haha.

Which part of this (below) do you get stuck on?

Cause it could be complex or it could be as simple as “you’re trying to flash to the UART and not the Arduino”

Just to confirm, you have a working setup with the CP210x UART board. it only doesn't work with the adafruit cables?

I've swapped TX and RX before with no change.

#

also tried different GRDs as well

can you post the link to the cable?

it's the same link of the hardware beginner* guide

#

I'm thinking I just got unlucky and it's faulty cables but I just wanted a sanity check

#

gonna just buy some smaller CP2102 usb modules if I can't get these to work

if it works with the cp2102 modules. it's probably an issue with the adafruit UART.

#

unless it's an issue with your jumper cables (unlikely).

if you really want the adafruit cable, you could consider getting it from the official source. in case the ones from amazons are just knockoffs (even though the link you posted looks right).

#

otherwise, yeah. you can just use the cp2102 modules.

Hope this isn't frowned upon but I'd like to update this thread in case anyone else uses it to troubleshoot. I could not figure out what caused the issue with the ADAFruit cables but I was able to get a simple usb UART to dupont board and it worked.
