So I'm working on simulating horn glass lantern panes (literally, translucent panes made of rolled open cow and ox horns). I found that 2mm acrylic plexi sanded and given some grain works well, but I want to add in a bit of color (-a la- the real-world examples pictured). I'm thinking pastel smudges on the interior, but I'm interested in suggestions.

Very cool project. Please keep posting updates would love to see the progress.
My first thought is acrylics with a bunch of translucent medium added in to get a subtle color. You can build up the layers and have some control of the color and opacity.
Water color would be cool but is finicky to apply and hard to layer. Also may not adhere as well and need a clear coat to help.
Yeah. Control of the opacity/translucency is gonna be the thing. Part of me is thinking airbrush, but there's something in my head saying to give oil pastels or soft chalk a try.
If you have some scrap try them all. Might find a combo is the solution. Big curiosity is how the color interacts with the texture of the acrylic.
That'll likely happen today. Photos will be taken...
