TL:DR uhhh in history there were 16 regions that were home to a lot of innocent people, and when a giant army invaded from the north, one captain decided to betray all 16 regions to surrender and become an emperor.
He then died 4 years later in ironic karma and when the invading army went back on their word and attacked again, there was a resistance that formed on a river to oppose to army annnnnnd.....got betrayed by their leader, so all of the resistance died and those 16 regions never recovered
so basically, a D&D party got betrayed by an NPC and they all died
