Nice episode! Just on Hetzner and Proxmox, it can be challenging. I wrote a blog post on this mainly so I wouldn’t forget. I cheat and don’t install Proxmox from an ISO, and instead start from Debian. That helps make things much easier. Also, it has info on how to install the DHCP server you kinda need to have to run multiple VMs. It’s for v7 of proxmox, but I doubt much has changed in the install process - https://www.rootisgod.com/2023/Creating-a-Cheap-but-Powerful-Proxmox-Server-with-Hetzner/

Catching up a few weeks late... @plucky spruce Can you elaborate on your needs for an XMPP server are? I have maintained an XMPP server for years, just because I can and have been looking for interesting uses for it.

That's probably who I was looking for... Still curious what interesting things folks are using XMPP for.

i think he just wants a super light weight/self hosted chat app

matrix is great, but it's also kind of a big piece of software. kind of like Nextcloud. sometimes have a dedicated app to to just one thing (ie chat 1 on 1) is ideal, versus Matrix which is 1-1 chats, group chats, spaces, etc.
