Now it's probably common knowledge, but I just remembered and re-realized this. You can buy robots outright with gold. You can also save up for components, reducing the gold price. If you win, at least in my league (either high Diamond or Expert), you get 30 gold. Of course I'm have been playing only free for all for 4 1/2 years because of device lag, but regardless this is what you get for winning. So, 30 gold per battle means 3,000 gold for winning 100 battles. 200-250 battles can buy some tier 3 robots, which cost a bit under 7,000 gold. And, if you buy components for said robot, it lowers the gold price. So, 100 battles won, each with 700k-1.5 million silver, you would have more than enough to support the around 1.5 million silver that buying more expensive components will cost.
If you win 5 battles a day at least, and get 1 million per battle, then you would make about 3.5 million per day after component tax, and 30 gold per round, getting you 150 gold per day, and you can buy 80 components per component shelf, meaning 480 per day, it would take you 21 days to buy a new robot, and 67 to buy it with gold. If you spent all your gold and silver on this robot, 150x21 is 3,150 gold, then there are many combinations which will get you the robot in about 2 weeks.
Plus, if you win components, like 2,500 components from an event, then you could use your extra money to convert those into the robot you want, meaning much less of a gold price. I don't have the numbers available, but you might be looking at 1 1-2 weeks, or 10 days to get something like a mender, if it costed 7000 gold or 10k components.

In short, there's a lot of ways, that when combined, can get you new gear relativly quick.

#

Of course this is based on 5 wins per day in free for all.
