1.12.2 is quite stable, it can run hundrets of players
but the worst thing is the tps difference betwen 1.12.2 and 1.8.8
i got 1.12.2 on my entire server and im rollbacking rn because i had so many issues this past 2 years
i went from 300 players to 60 because it was unplayable

No, but Survival couldnt handle 20 players in my old machine.
Okay it was a bad machine anyways so i switched to a better one.
But now i cant pass 120 players without lag.
Something i could achieve with a crappy machine with little lag on 1.8.8.
so i want to rollback because im having issues again and i dont want to buy a better machine
plus tweaking the mechanics is so brain wrecking just putting 1.8.8 will fix the issue
you cant pass 120 on 1.12? that sounds like a problem with your setup

I can successfully modify the enchants stored in the ItemMeta on a book that a villager is trading, but for some reason that doesn't actually update the enchants on the book. Any tips?
I apply the recipe using merchant.setRecipe(index, ruinRecipe(merchant.getRecipe(index)));
If I retrieve the villager trades in a different event it indeed shows the enchants as modified, but in the GUI the original appears, and when I trade the original also appears in the output, and when I apply that book only the original enchants are applied.
Does anyone know how to get the variants of a material? Or at least check whether a material even has variants?
with variants i mean stuff like different types of wood for example
There are no variants. All blocks have their own constants
id you simply need to check if its a plank for example, you could use toString().endsWith("PLANKS") but as far as detecting if it has multiple variants sounds like a switch/case

well as it turns out
a server is already running on the port you're trying to use. You likely closed the server without using the stop command and it is still running in the background
A computer restart will resolve the issue, or terminate any Java tasks running in the background

My next debate is whether what would be superior in reading/performance.
A NBT compound that keeps data about each custom enchantment or individual NBT tags per enchant.
As having a item with 40 nbt tags sounds awful and Minecraft currently utilizes a single compound for enchantments and then stores the name of the enchantment and level in the compound with all enchants on the item.
Yea, though there's something you have to realize. Mojang uses NBT as persistent storage. All of that is read upon ItemStack construction
We don't really have that luxury because Bukkit wraps or mirrors it all and creates new ItemStack objects every time we want to fetch it from the inventory. The changes won't be mirrored to NMS if changed so we can't just cache what was read and say "yea, this item stack is in this exact slot"
So in terms of performance, either approach is going to be equally as bad. I'd say mimic what vanilla does and have an array of objects

Well at the moment I feel as a custom NBT library I use by a friend is limiting me as it seems like his compound system is broken. I don't experience lag issues when using NBT just overall performance I would think be lowering overtime.
I'll have to likely just use the public NBT API for compounds.

Apperanltly Villagers do not get their trades from their recipe list. You can change their recipe list but what they trade stays the same...
I changed a trade for bane of arthopods to two curses, and it shows up correctly in the recipe list for that villager:
ENCHANTED_META:{meta-type=ENCHANTED, stored-enchants={VANISHING_CURSE=1, BINDING_CURSE=1}}
however in the GUI it still shows bane or arthopods, and after doing the trade it indeed gives me that enchant instead of the new ones:

If you want to @wanton delta after all its open source. However, I recommend forking off spigot since spigot applies some fixes and what not to craftbukkit.
ive got 4 decompile folders in my buildtools/work directory

use the second one from the top. It is the most recent could even use the top one too. Just look at the date and time
it could be from running buildtools on multiple versions though
but the decompile directory is where you will get the decompiled source for things like NMS
