#Ancient PCS Computer: Would it run W11?

Hellos. I'm not very tech savvy so really don't know.
With the upcoming Windows 11 rush, I realised that this old beast (bought from PCS in 2012) may or may not be elegible for the migration.

Is it? Could it run 11?
The alternative I'm thinking of is flinging it at linux, but I know about the penguin as much as I know about cars. Nadda.

FYI: This is not my current computer. This old lady was gifted to my mother many years ago now - she only uses it to check amazon and play solitaire.

Even the company logo was different back then. Wow.

Time to get a new PC me thinks...and this is the right place for it 😉

Lol literally just did!
It arrived a couple of weeks ago.

The one had before it was retired to lab/office pc because it was having troubles.

New pc works a dream.

The one above however is my mothers from 2012. She turns it on about three times a year, so just trying to figure out if it'll run windows 11 or if it'll need the penguin (linux) treatment

Cant you just leave it on whatever Windows its on?

Ooh I missed he message above! No to 11 then. Poo

It's currently on 10 I think. Wonder if I can downgrade it back to 7 lol

At this point, considering that she only uses it to check Amazon and play Solitaire, get her a cheap tablet

I offered her that and she went on a ten minute rant about liking mouses and she hates touch screens... Mentioning blue tooth mice are a thing helped at least.

Problem with tablets is that they end up out of date in a handful of years

#

Because windows 10 is being bricked by microsoft? (Or something to that effect)

ionic cosmos
#

Just like any other version of Windows...none of them are supported anymore with Windows 10 following suit

wheat badger
#

Doesnt mean it wont work, just means no more updates

ionic cosmos
#

It's just how it goes. It's not getting bricked...just not supported anymore

blissful mural
#

🤔 so they're not just bricking the system, just no longer supporting/dropping security updates?

So you're exposing your mum to further risks if you don't get onto Win11

AG_Sweat I don't even know when she last turned it on tbh. So much cat hair and dust on it...

Is it just the cpu that can't handle 11 then? Though perhaps to hit the bare minimum i'd have to upgrade the motherboard too AG_Sob and then everything else too.

Computers are beyond me.

Hmm. What's the general shelf life on a laptop? Would it last 10-12 years under low useage?

ionic cosmos
#

Same as a desktop PC
The components age just the same really

blissful mural
#

Aren't they way harder to upgrade on a laptop? Or are things more modular nowadays?

ionic cosmos
#

Why upgrade if your mum only checks Amazon and plays Solitaire?

blissful mural
#

In case a component dies

#

Just hypothetical barricading so I know I can save her if it goes wrong

ionic cosmos
#

It certainly is trickier

I guess the last questions now are, how do I get rid of an old paperweight? bceTired3Dead4 I don't actually know what to do with a computer once it's dead. Is there a way of recycling them? And what about the stuff on the hard drives?

#

Gotta disappear for a bit.

Thank you so much for the discussion so far!

the hard drives are probably fine, and can either be just used in a new PC, or made into external drives via a dock

#

fans can probably be transplanted or made into little moderately dangerous desk fans

#

as for the rest, generally all can be simply chucked in a recycling bin after the CMOS battery is removed, or google local electronics recycling

Thank you muchly!

alternatively, maybe make a project of it, find a cheap motherboard and make it a home server the PSU is probably fine, the GPU isn't exactly a beast and once you get a cheap RAM kit, CPU and motherboard, you can use it for whatever
