Hello guys, I just purchases a new PC. Specs are here: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/saved-configurations/amd-am5-pc/qAuKBJ34PR/

When I receive the PC, is there anything I should do to maximise my performance?

In the future, how easy is upgrading the PC through PCspecialist? I’m thinking this build should have good performance for the next 5-7 years

Thanks for creating a spec thread!

Please be sure to include answers to the following questions so people can assist you quicker.

  • What is the purpose of your PC/laptop? (e.g. gaming, general work, 3D rendering)
  • What monitor resolution will you be using? (e.g. 1080p, 1440p, 4k)
  • What is your budget including currency symbol? (e.g. £2,000, 1000€)
  • Which country are you purchasing from? (Note that we only operate in the UK and Europe)
  • Any brand preferences?

in all likelyhood, the 7950X3D is ghoulish overkill for your needs

If you could answer the above questions then people may be able to make some tweaks to make sure you're not wasting youre money - eg if for gaming there's definitely a few things that could be changed

We do have a nice info thing showing what you need to do when you get your new PC but you probably dont need to see that quite yet

Add a smaller SSD for boot drive

pine dove
#

It’s £16 compared to the usual price lol

slow orchid
#

all you need comes with windows from the get go, it's 16 quid for WORSE performance because Norton is a leech

placid vine
slow orchid
#

the extra thermal paste is a waste as well because the cooler already comes with a premium paste pre-applied

pine dove
#

Just for context, I have already purchased the above

placid vine
#

You can amend it before it arrives

royal birch
#

Buying the most expensive option doesn’t always mean you have the best pc

placid vine
#

So yes please answer the BOT's questions 🙂

pine dove
slow orchid
#

and even though you did buy it, you can still amend, as Rakk said, please answer the bots questions

royal birch
#

You can log in to the pcs website using the email you used to place order and can then choose to amend order

#

And differences in price will result in a refund or request to pay the difference

slow orchid
#

it's free of charge to amend before it gets built, so you can still changed things at no extra cost

Purpose of the pc - gaming, general work
Monitor for resolution - 4k for single player games, 1440p for FPS games
Budget - £5000
Country - UK
Brand - Ryzen CPUs,

royal birch
#

7800x3d would be the better cpu in that scenario

pine dove
#

Seems like I have the choice to amend order now. So we were thinking to change CPU, remove norton and extra thermal paste?

Add 1TB drive for a boot drive

#

Keep your 4TB for games, but check board has more than one PCIe 5 slot

#

Otherwise drop the 4TB drive down to a pcie4 version

#

You want the fastest slot for your boot drive

pine dove
#

It has two

placid vine
#

Probably dont need that pricey a motherboard either

pine dove
#

It’s the only one with the pcie 5.0 slots I believe

placid vine
#

The Strix and Tuf have PCI 5 as well by the looks of things

pine dove

I think I tried a couple and it wasn’t compatible with the setup

pine dove
slow orchid
#

I'd sink money into other things like monitors, mouse+keyboard, desk, chair, speakers/headphones etc

#

the TUF 4090 can be changed to a "plain" 4090 for no real performance loss, but saving a fair chunk of change

pine dove
#

That is true, I just prefer the colour scheme

#

I have a 4k 240hz monitor, headphones, controller, chair and desk already

#

It doesn’t seem to allow me to choose another gen 5 SSD, even though it has 2 on the motherboard. Maybe the Crucial one I have is impacting that

lilac tundra
#

ssd speed does not matter that much for gaming right now so even a gen 4 would be completley fine

placid vine
#

Yes a gen4 would be perfectly fine for your gaming drive

lilac tundra
#

games run on sata ssds drivers which are slower than any gen m2 drives

pine dove
#

Is gen 4 not fine for a boot drive?

lilac tundra
#

gen 5 is just faster

#

gen 4 is completely fine for a boot drive its still very fast just they are not as fast as gen 5

pine dove
#

7800x3d is out of stock so will stick with 950x3d

slow orchid
#

Gen 4 is perfectly fine for the boot drive, and for the general games and whatnot storage even gen 3 is fine

pine dove
#

Is there a reason you can’t just have the OS on the same drive

#

Thought this was more of a thing when HDDs were the primary storage for games

lilac tundra
#

if everythings on one drive and then you need to reformat you lose everything

slow orchid
#

if the drive up and dies on you, or windows buggers up and becomes so corrupt you can't fix it, then when you reinstall, you loose everything on that drive

pine dove
#

So it’s more of a thing to be safe then

I'd recommend something more like this

lilac tundra
#

the other question is if hes just gaming does he need 64gb ram

slow orchid
#

some games are more of a RAM hog than anything else, and while it's overkill, its not much of an overkill

#

I really don't recommend all the corsair stuff personally though, as nice as link is, iCue to control all of it, is very much not

pine dove
#

I did see that but then a lot of people said it’s better than the alternatives

#

In the end, I’m not too bothered if the software aspect is mediocre

slow orchid
#

the problem is iPoo isn't only mediocre, it's actually bad

#

iPoo version 4 is the most stable, least funky one currently, and it's still got issues

pine dove
#

Hardware companies never really seem to be that good with software

#

Do pcspecialist check the RGB before shipping?

slow orchid
#

I don't think so, but it's very rare for that to fail

lilac tundra
#

if it does fail you can always contact them
