#PC Build - 3,500 euro budget

Would love help with trying to configure a gaming PC build. Had my Lenovo Legion 5 only 3 years, last week it overheated & fried the chip for cpu & gpu. Laptop is now dead.

Games I play include Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster, City Skylines, Flight Simulator, The Witcher etc.
I’m looking for something that has a lot of RAM memory, graphics card & something that won’t overheat as easily.

Very overwhelmed right now with all the options. But hoping I have a nice budget to work with.

Thanks for creating a spec thread!

Please be sure to include answers to the following questions so people can assist you quicker.

  • What is the purpose of your PC/laptop? (e.g. gaming, general work, 3D rendering)
  • What monitor resolution will you be using? (e.g. 1080p, 1440p, 4k)
  • What is your budget including currency symbol? (e.g. £2,000, 1000€)
  • Which country are you purchasing from? (Note that we only operate in the UK and Europe)
  • Any brand preferences?

@formal gazelle If you can answer the extra questions above like resolution and country

formal gazelle
#

Resolution 1440p but thinking of purchasing a 4k monitor in the future.
Ireland.

frigid sandal
#

32GB of RAM will have you sorted for most games, but since there is still some elbow room in the budget you can bump it to 64GB

Solid build from DrLeft above @formal gazelle 🙂

I went overkill on a few things, the motherboard could be downsized, GPU could have an AMD alternative to same some, the 4Tb drive could be swapped to a 2TB, the case could be a less expensive option, but in for a penny in for a euro, no?

#

cooler could be smaller too, but for peace of mind overkill is barely enough

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

it won't have space for more, the case comes with 3 140mm fans on the front, and 1 on the back, with the AIO on top it will ahve 3 more 120mm fans

#

the PSU shroud might be able to mount more, but they won't benefit much in my experience

#

nope, the shoudl doesn't mount more, so 7 in total, no need to add more, unless you want to change the ones that come with out later

wary sluice
#

Even if you could easily fit in extra fans all it would likely do is make it louder

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

there is no real benefit to a different CPU, the 7800X3D is the best for gaming, if you also wanted some productivity like editing or coding, then there is an argument for the 7950X3D, or did you mean the GPU?

#

if you meant changing GPU, then it's price, you get better value for money on AMD GPUs

#

changing to a 7900XTX gets you generally slightly better performance, while saving about 100eu, you do loose out on the Nvidia gimmicks like better ray tracing performance, frame gen, but you do get better AMD gimmicks like the zero lag tech

#

as for screen recommendations, what are you looking for, ultra wide, will you want a secondary monitor, what kind of refresh rate and panel type(VA, IPS, OLED) do you have in mind, and what kind of budget are you looking at?

#

and here, size matters, a monitor can be as good as it wants to be, but if it overwhelms your desk and then some, it's not the right one for you

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

IPS right now is best value, OLED is best overall, VA is most affordable

#

for 4K you really want a 32" or bigger screen, so 1440p is better for that size

#

also, running at 1440p will let you have a better frame rate

#

the different panels have different benefits, OLED is just best at it all, basically
IPS have good color reproduction and grey to grey repsonse times

VA tends to have better black than IPS, but can have something called ghosting

#

capacity and price.
if SolidIGM made a 4TB drive that PCS had in stock, and it was cheaper, they I would have gotten a SolidIGM

#

to be honest, a 2TB drive is likely enough to start with, but then you'd either need to swap the drive completely, or add another in later, and the games you listed before can get pretty big, pretty fast

formal gazelle
#

Price increases for Samsung 990 pro?

frigid sandal
#

the smaller SolidIGM is faster, and should only have windows and the diva programs that don't give a drive location choice, the games/general stroage drive doesn't need to be super fast, so a 990 pro is overkill for that

#

the 990 pro is about 80eu more, for no real benefit

#

honestly, a gen 3 drive would do just fine for that as well, but PCS don't offer any with 4TB space

#

in a comparison on load times for games, it shaves a few seconds off a 30+ second load time going from a gen 3 drive to a gen 5, and the price skyrockets for a few seconds

#

if it halved the load time, then yeah, I'd say worth, but mere seconds aren't a fair trade IMO

formal gazelle
#

How do I upload my saved quote so that he can see if it’s ok?

frigid sandal
formal gazelle
#

I’m currently on a Chromebook & typing here on my phone.

frigid sandal
#

why pick the 7950X3D? it's not quiet as good for gaming, still great mind you, but will generate more heat, and with it noise

#

the drives aren't how I'd set them either, as in the case windows gets corrupt beyond repair, or the drive wins the silicon lottery and dies on you, you loose all date on that drive, so a small drive for windows, and a big drive for everything else is better. the second, larger drive doesn't get wiped in a windows reinstall

#

the better paste also doesn't really benefit you, might as well save the 12 quid and spend it at the chipper

#

also, the Silver warranty is worth the piece of mind

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

it's not as tidy as 2 drives, but saves some money

the 7800X3D is the best gaming CPU, so the extra cores on the 7950X3D just will end up heating your room and do nothing for you

#

the extra RAM is nice for the sims as it can be quite the hog, but also isn't needed per se

#

the CPU, 7800X3D is in my PC right now, and I am using a smaller cooler too, the FrostFlow 240, and the highest I've gotten it to under 100% load peaked at 80C, but stayed at 75C, and only has throttling at 90C, so with bigger FF360 in the spec for you will easily keep it from overheating

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

if you wanted to lean into the full RGB everything, the strimmers are what I'd recommend

#

this set

#

@autumn mist got a pic on hand for how it looks?

autumn mist
frigid sandal
#

so your PC would look vaguely like this, and extra fan on top is the main difference

#

thank you btw Achilles!

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

if you add them, your room will not need ceiling lights, and can function as a discoball

#

at least when the PC is running

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

do mind, they are purely cosmetic, they add nothing to the function of the PC

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

2TB saves money, but will occupy an extra m.2 slot, leaving you with only 1 slot left

personally for sake of tidiness, I'd pick the 4TB drive

formal gazelle
#

And led lighting? Where would that be?

frigid sandal
#

that is a strip of LED lights, added by the builder to their best judgement, I don't care for RGB really, but those are harsh LED lights and just look naff IMO

#

they aren't nicely diffused as all the other lights will be

frail wadi
frigid sandal
#

also, those lights will be ghoulish overkill at that point, there is already alot going on

formal gazelle
#

Yeah I guess you’re right, taking out the 2nd tb & changing to corsair 4gb price went down.

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

change to the 7800X3D, more cores is not more better

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

for gaming 32x2 is generally more than enough, as for the motherboards, the differences are some QoL additions, and looks

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

Amazon is your better bet, last I checked, the 1440p selection PCS has was underwhelming

formal gazelle
formal gazelle
#

Is there a difference between Nvidia Geforce 4080 super vs Asus Tuf 4080 Super, theres about 200 euro in the difference.

frail wadi
#

It's called 'Asus tax'

formal gazelle
swift sentinel
#

he means your paying for the asus name there would be very little if any difference between the cards

formal gazelle
#

If i go down the route of Luna versions, and sticking with current options, which Case would you recommend similiar dimensions to black Be Quiet as they dont have the white version.

frigid sandal
#

sorry for the late response, didn't notice the question until now, there are a few options for size/space.

#

those four are the best for size/capacity

the Fractal north XL(198eu) is the nicest case IMO, but really shouldn't have any RGB in it, it ruins the look,

the 7000D(187eu) is good, but its HUGE, and will cost a fair deal more for additional fans

the 5000X(171eu) is big, but not much different to the be quiet model, but does only come with 3 fans on the front, and are a pain because corsair software and the corsair only connectors used

finally the Lumin(135eu) it's a decent case, but due to the paroramic case layout, it's a wideboi, but it does take "standard" RGB fans without major issues

#

@formal gazelle

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

for the price, by far, it will have the same cooling within a margin of error, but not have the same troubel as far as weird connections and software that the corsair ones do

#

it connects with standard PWM for fan speed/pump and 3 pin for the ARGB, and can be controlled easily via bios or programs like get fan control

#

it's downside is that it will be louder, offset by the be quiet case, and when going full tilt on gaming won't make much of a difference assuming you use a headset

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

I can't recommend that case, the iCue fans will more than likely give you grief for the fan speed and color

#

plus you are playing an awful lot for no real benefit

formal gazelle
#

Oh really, damn, im getting more overwhelmed and overthinking it

frigid sandal
#

RAM is a bit excessive, but not wildly overkill either, some games may benefit though

#

I say stick with the be quiet! case I recommended before, big, still got a lightshow, but not excessive

formal gazelle
#

Reason i wanted lots of ram was because Planet Zoo is a very heavy game replying on RAM, and with Planet Coaster 2 coming out soon i assume that would be the same.

#

Pity the Be Quiet is not there in White

frigid sandal
#

if you want a white case, I'd say this one then

#

no weird corsair fan weirdness

#

if you didn't have all the RGB, then the fractal north XL

#

I'd also not bother with the corsair cooler, costs more for no real benefit

#

also, only recently another corsair cooler was DOA, the frost flow coolers haven't had that issue that I can recall

formal gazelle
#

reconfigured - its saying remove wifi card.... i assume Rog Strix supports connections to 5g whifi, not just 2.4g

frigid sandal
#

I think I have that board in mine, pretty sure it does 5 and 2.4

#

yeah, it does 2.4,5 and 6 GHz

formal gazelle
#

So thats the Rog Strix X670E - A Gaming

frigid sandal
#

speeds like that only really benefit video editing

formal gazelle
#

Does having a 1000 w instead of 850 be of more benefit or is it bad?

frigid sandal
#

down side now is it will cost more, benefit later is less trouble upgrading, and no PSU to dispose of later.

the RMx PSUs don't need you to change the cables when you swap between them in case of an upgrader

#

the PSU won't pull more power than it needs so the ever rising electric bills won't see a difference between the 850W and 1000W

formal gazelle
#

Also forgot to mention, daughter is in secondary school & now doing Digital Graphics. Any changes to SSD ie Cruicial? To make things faster / smoother etc.

frigid sandal
#

I doubt it to be honest, photoshop and co care more about the CPU and RAM, and to a small extent the GPU

#

then again, I haven't a clue what JC/LC kids use for art and design these days

formal gazelle
#

Me neither, just thinking furture proofing it as it may be awhile before upgrading again.

frigid sandal
#

it'll be so low level for the secondary schtuff that if they are only starting secondary now, the whole PC is liable for a full replacement when they hit 6th year

#

is it even called 6th year still?

formal gazelle
#

Yep sure is

#

so maybe 2 x 2 TB Samsung 990 pro, comes within my budget

frigid sandal
#

you can add one later if you feel you need it, but for now I'd consider it a bit of a waste of money, the motherboard has 4 m.2 slots total, so you could feed it more if you wanted to later

formal gazelle
#

the 1st SSD is used mainly for Windows right? What if you just get 1 SSD, i assume all storage will stay on that?

frigid sandal
#

if all you get is the 1TB, it'll be sharing space with windows. and in the case windows becomes corrupt beyond salvage, or the drive pushes daisies, then everything on that drive is lost

#

thats the main reason I personally push for multiple drives

formal gazelle
#

Gotcha, i have selected 1 TB for Windows, and 2 TB for a 2nd SSD. Both Samsung 990 Pro

#

Now just need to shutup and get ordering before i overthink things even more

frigid sandal
#

looks good

formal gazelle
# frigid sandal looks good

Thanks for all your help over the last few days. I have just ordered, as per the last configuration. Looking forward to receiving it. Next up is a Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse. So any further recommendation you may have on that would be great. I do have a 100 euro voucher for amazon that can go towards something.

frigid sandal
#

Mouse, G502 is what I am using now, though I did really love my G603 for the battery life
Keyboard G915

as for monitor, it all depends on the budget for it

#

I'd recommend dropping the mouse/keyboard/monitor question in #762988481634369556 to reach more folks

#

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CNH24KTM this is my current monitor, and I love it, but you can certainly do better, budget permitting

formal gazelle
frigid sandal
#

4k eats framerate, and needs to be bigger than that to be worthwhile

#

32"+ for a standard widescreen, that one is an ultrawide 34", I value a higher FPS thna a higher resolution

formal gazelle
#

So 1440 would be the sweet spot then for both FPS & Resolution.

frigid sandal
#

yup, even on 4k, the 4090 has a hard time with ultra settings cracking 120fps

#

there is much more to it, like dropping certain settings down, and the game itself, but for the newest games, you're taking a big FPS hit

#

1440p is also a cost sweetspot for the resolution, as 4k screens are still pretty damn expensive for refresh rates over 120hz
