#Would this build get too hot?

I'm in the market for a new PC because my old one has stopped working and, to be honest, it's too large for my current space. In the past, I've had issues with my PCs overheating, so I went overboard with my last build, making it quite immense. Now, I simply don't have the room for such a large setup. This time, I want to go for a more compact build. Could you help me determine if this case is too small for these specs? It needs to be able to run Cities: Skylines 2 smoothly.

Thanks for creating a spec thread!

Please be sure to include answers to the following questions so people can assist you quicker.

  • What is the purpose of your PC/laptop? (e.g. gaming, general work, 3D rendering)
  • What monitor resolution will you be using? (e.g. 1080p, 1440p, 4k)
  • What is your budget including currency symbol? (e.g. £2,000, 1000€)
  • Which country are you purchasing from? (Note that we only operate in the UK and Europe)
  • Any brand preferences?

Mostly for gaming, Cities Skylines 1 (heavily modded) and 2. Also play a lot of simcity 4 but... its a 20 year old game so I have no worries about running that - Using a 1080p monitor but have plans to upgrade to a 2K eventually. My budget is roughly £1300 & UK.

is there a reason you chose an ITX build?

#

also, europe is not a country

willow shale

Sorry I misread that as region

thing is you pay alot for the small size

willow shale

what do you mean?

itx boards and cases tend to cost a fair deal more than full size ATX boards

I don't really mind as long as it works or stays cool enough

#

thats my main concern

I do like the look of the Fractal Terra & Fractal Torrent Nano @dawn fern

#

Both would probably fit on my desk but the torrent nano would be a tighter fit

dawn fern
#

So these are your dimensions.. which yeah.. are pretty big
Dimensions (L x W x H): 525 x 228 x 502mm

#

You're saying you need something -much- smaller than that? Or just a decent amount smaller?

#

For example - the PCS Prism II case will still fit full-sized components in it, but it's 447mm x 210mm x 363mm (H x W x D)

willow shale
#

Ideally, much smaller than my current case. For example, the Fractal Torrent Nano when measured will just about fit onto my desk, anything larger than the nano probably won't fit my desk. @dawn fern

Ok - so you will have to obviously understand that your temperatures are going to be higher in a smaller case

willow shale
#

I could, sit it under my desk again but my current case takes up so much room it's quite uncomfortable for my legs lol

dawn fern
#

I just wanted to understand the situation because you said you'd had issues before with overheating - a SFF case is going to increase those temperatures

willow shale
#

Yeah so my last build tended to overheat, so I went a bit overboard and opted for the larger case. I understand a smaller case will run hotter than my current setup, but I don’t game as much as I used to, so I’m okay with that trade-off for more space. As long as it can handle Cities: Skylines 2 without getting too hot, I’m good.

#

I like the sound of these configurations too ^^

So there's a few things I'd definitely change from your build above. The Intel 12700 is a hot-running CPU and coolers for SFF builds are small, so I'd recommend swapping that to the more thermal efficient 14400F. You also chose 1 x 32GB DIMM instead of 2 x 16gb which will be slower because it's only running single channel. So I've changed that and swapped your m.2 drive to the Solidigm to move your budget around a little. You've chosen the 16GB version of the 4060ti which I don't think you need to do if you're gaming at 1080p but that's your call.

It's also worth considering an AMD build for your budget - those are the superior gaming CPUs right now.

Thank you! In the configurations you sent youve used a different case from the terra or torrent nano does that matter? Also, The reason I went for a 16gb gpu and didn't go for amd was apparently cities skylines 2 runs better on a card with 16gb? How much better? No clue. It might be insignificant and the game also performs worse on AMD gpus for whatever reason. There is a lot of optimisation issues with the game so these things could change with time but that was my thought process @dawn fern

#

I'll take a look to see how the game performs with amd gpus just in case, the games had a few big updates lately.

In both specs that Jem suggested the GPU's were NVidia (not AMD) GPUs
One spec has an AMD CPU, but thats different

Ok.. I wasn't familiar with Cities Skylines 2, but apparently it is poorly optimised made better by a recent patch - but still heavy on the GPU so I now understand the need for the VRAM. I don't know if your budget has any give or not - but it looks like the Radeon 7800XT has the best price/performance, coming in just under the 4070ti. In fact it seems to be the AMD cards are performing better overall vs. NVIDIA.

#

(though you might want to add a fan or two into that build as I don't think the case comes with any)
